Firefighter

The City of Arkansas City is seeking a dedicated firefighter to join their team. This full-time position offers a competitive salary range of $43,508.00 to $68,766.00 annually and is located in Arkansas City, KS within the Fire/EMS Department.

The role involves a wide range of responsibilities including firefighting, emergency care, hazardous materials handling, and fire prevention. The firefighter will maintain fire/EMS equipment and facilities, and may engage in physical tasks that require strenuous effort and exposure to hazardous conditions. This position reports to a Fire/Lieutenant and Fire/EMS Captain, with emergency command structure adjustments during incidents.

The firefighter will receive general guidance from a Fire/EMS Lieutenant and may assist in supervising new employees. Essential functions include performing firefighting activities, providing emergency aid, participating in fire prevention programs, and conducting general maintenance of facilities and equipment.

Non-essential functions may involve attending conferences, representing the department in various meetings, and performing additional duties as assigned.

Required knowledge includes modern fire suppression and prevention, EMS principles, and inspection techniques. Skills in operating firefighting and EMS equipment are necessary, along with the ability to perform physical tasks under extreme conditions. The candidate must also possess a high school diploma or equivalent, coursework in fire science or medical studies, and a valid Class B Non-commercial driver's license with a safe driving record. A current Kansas Paramedic license and CPR certification are also required.

Pre-employment testing includes criminal history background checks, a physical capacity profile, drug screen, and alcohol testing.

The work environment is diverse, including office, vehicle, and outdoor settings in all weather conditions. The firefighter will be exposed to various hazards and must meet the physical demands of the job, including medium work as defined by the Department of Labor.
