GWCCA PUBLIC SAFETY OVERVIEW

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) Public Safety function is responsible for delivering safe and efficient support to world-class events and guest experiences. Through strong communication with neighboring agencies, operational oversight, vendor partnerships, and team leadership, Public Safety ensures the Authority’s facilities operate at the highest standards of quality, safety practices, emergency management, and incident response.

GWCCA CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER POSITION SUMMARY

The Authority is currently hiring a Campus Safety Officer to join our team. The Campus Safety Officer assists in developing policies, procedures, and processes relating to fire and life safety activities in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, voluntary and regulatory agency guidelines, and other fire and life safety organizational best practices. The Campus Safety Officer will also assist in the overall emergency preparedness efforts of the Authority.

Candidates under final consideration must complete a criminal history evaluation and drug screening as a condition of employment.

GWCCA CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Fast-paced, professional work environment in a dynamic convention, sports, entertainment, and hospitality venue.
• Supports event-based business which may require irregular work hours, flexible scheduling, and availability to support evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events based on operational needs.
• Work performed in varying event facilities and conditions across the Authority's campus (indoors and outdoors).
• May be expected to perform or respond effectively to changing priorities, time-sensitive operational issues, and emergency situations while maintaining composure under pressure.
• Requires frequent interaction with large crowds in public venue and event settings while maintaining professionalism, composure, and exceptional customer service.

GWCCA CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is moderately exposed to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, toxic chemicals, electrical currents, pathogens, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, traffic, animals, and/or loud noises. The ability to lift 50 pounds or more may be required of this position. Daily shifts will endure various degrees of walking, standing, turning, crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing and pulling, requiring a full range of body movements. This position may require work inside or outside of the building, as needed by events.

In addition to the obvious dangers of fire and life safety Campus Safety Officers need to be constantly alert and ready to deal appropriately with a number of threatening situations. Officers frequently work weekends, holidays, and nights. Officers are expected to report for duty in full uniform with the appropriate and necessary equipment needed in the performance of their duty. All positions are required to work in inclement weather conditions if necessary. Tasks include but are limited to working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling, where extremely heightened awareness of surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property.

GWCCA CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for planning, administering, and managing fire and life safety programs throughout the Authority, and to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations and standards concerning fire and life safety.
• Serve as the subject matter expert on fire and life safety for the Authority. Represents the Public Safety Department on fire and life safety concerns at meetings and various committees.
• Act in conjunction and coordination with Event Services as liaison with the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the city of Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, and other regulatory agencies as necessary.
• Develop and implement fire and life safety programs, procedures, and processes to ensure the safety of Authority, employees, clients, and visitors in accordance with applicable state and local fire and life safety rules, regulations and codes.
• Direct all activities associated with fire and life safety programs, manage the inspection and maintenance of fire protection systems and evaluate life safety implications in the Authority's facilities.
• Review construction projects for compliance with fire and life safety regulations/codes and Authority standards.
• Provide technical guidance to Authority departments and personnel, attend departmental meetings and assist departments in implementing general fire and life safety policies, and event specific fire plans and measures.
• Work with state and local fire personnel to conduct detailed investigations of any fires on Authority property and prepare reports for Authority stakeholders.
• Review event plans and conduct pre and live show safety inspections.
• Arrange for immediate corrective actions for any discovered concerns.
• Develop and deliver programs in conjunction with all of the Authority to instill a culture of safety awareness as part of everyone’s daily job function.
• Prepare reports and presentations for staff and executive use that track trends, violations, as well as areas of improvement.
• Assist, as directed, in the overall emergency preparedness program at the Authority.
• Supports emergency management/ homeland security projects assigned to the Office of Emergency Management. 
• Such other duties, functions, and responsibilities as required by the Emergency Preparedness Manager.

• Experience working for a multi-purpose facility servicing major exhibition, entertainment or meeting oriented events preferred.

• Ability to multi-task & work under pressure with limited resources.

GWCCA CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Risk Management, or related field. Experience may substitute the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
• Must have three years (3) experience in a facility safety, emergency management, or fire background. Training in and experience with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and industry best practices. 
• Previous experience with the Incident Command System (ICS) and working in an Emergency Operations Center type structure during major events or crisis.  
• Must have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) for this position.  
• Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook systems.  
• Qualified as a Georgia - Certified Emergency Manager preferred
• Multi-lingual skills are preferred.
