Job Description - Summary
Fire and Rescue Instructors will instruct within their area of expertise or qualification using approved student success measures. These measures will be determined by the Director of Fire and Rescue Programs/ESTC and be in compliance with the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission Testing Policy and Delivery Agency requirements where applicable. Fire and Rescue Instructors will participate in professional development activities as required and shall maintain their certification and qualification levels.
NOTE: The purpose of a continuous recruitment posting is to build a pool of interested applicants should the need for additional adjuncts arise due to student enrollment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
I. TEACHING
a. Conducting in a professional manner all class hours as assigned by the course schedule and Program Director
b. Create correct and professional lesson plans, instructional materials, demonstrations, or other materials as appropriate for the specific class
c. Meeting classes on time and for the full duration of the published class time
d. Notifying the Director of Fire and Rescue Programs/ESTC or Coordinator as soon as possible in the event of illness, delay to, or early departure from class
e. Supporting and following all college policies and procedures
f. Assuming reasonable responsibility for security, maintenance, and inventory of assigned equipment and supplies
g. Preparing and submitting accurate and legible attendance rosters or other assigned documents when due
h. Shall remain up to date on the textbooks used by Surry Community College in the Fire and Rescue Programs Area
II. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
a. Participating in state, college, county, or locally sponsored professional development activities as schedule permits. This includes instructor development, re-certification, and re-qualification.
III. MAINTAIN A CLEAN AND SAFE WORK AREA.
General Qualifications
To be successful with this position, an individual must be able to perform the tasks and skills associated with firefighting and / or rescue satisfactorily. The should be knowledgeable in the subject area they are instructing and meet all applicable requirements of the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission for the instructional level at which they are going to function.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
• Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and write as applicable to subject area
• Ability to respond to common inquiries and/or complaints from students, internal staff, or members of the college community
• Ability to effectively present information to students, internal staff, or members of the college community
REASONING ABILITY:
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to interpret an extensive variety of information
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
• Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of the College and to the philosophy of the community college system
Required Qualifications

NCFRC Certification as Instructor I or II as appropriate for the subject area

Physical Demands
The physical demands associated with this position are the same physical demands that any person filling the role of firefighter or rescuer would be required to meet.
Work Environment
The work environment for this position will vary greatly based upon temperature, weather, and hazards associated with the environment. While this is an instructional position, it is expected that this position will be potentially exposed to life safety hazards for which the use of approved personal protective equipment is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions in some cases, but due to the nature of this program area, it may be impossible or unsafe to provide.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions.
• Exposure to intense heat or cold along with fire, chemical, and respiratory hazards is to be expected.
• The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate, but can be extreme at various times.
