What is a financial planner?

A Financial Planner is a professional who helps individuals and organizations manage their finances and plan for their financial future. They provide advice on topics such as budgeting, investing, retirement savings, tax strategies, and estate planning. Financial Planners work closely with clients to understand their financial goals and develop personalized plans to achieve them. Many Financial Planners hold certifications, such as Certified Financial Planner (CFP), which demonstrate their expertise and commitment to ethical standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a financial planner?

To thrive as a Financial Planner, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of financial products, and typically a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field, often supplemented by certifications like CFP (Certified Financial Planner). Proficiency with financial planning software, portfolio management tools, and CRM systems is essential. Exceptional interpersonal communication, ethical judgment, and active listening set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for building client trust, developing effective financial strategies, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

What challenges do financial planners face when building a client base, and how can they be addressed?

Financial Planners often find that establishing a strong client base is an initial hurdle, as trust and credibility are critical in this field. Many planners overcome this by networking extensively, seeking referrals from existing clients, and consistently demonstrating value through tailored financial advice. Leveraging technology, participating in community events, and maintaining professional certifications can also help build reputation. Persistence, excellent communication skills, and a genuine interest in clients’ financial goals are key to long-term success.

What is the difference between Financial Planner vs Financial Advisor?

Work EnvironmentIndependent or firm-based, comprehensive planningBank, brokerage, or independent, investment-focused
Primary FocusHolistic financial planning including retirement, estate, taxesInvestment management and product sales

While both roles involve helping clients manage their finances, a Financial Planner provides comprehensive, long-term financial planning services, often holding CFP or ChFC certifications. A Financial Advisor may focus more on investment management and may hold additional licenses like Series 7 or 66. The roles often overlap, but the Financial Planner emphasizes holistic planning, whereas the Financial Advisor may concentrate on investment products and portfolio management.

How much do financial planners get paid?

Financial planners typically earn a median annual salary of around $89,000, with salaries ranging from approximately $50,000 to over $200,000 depending on experience, location, and client base. Many financial planners also earn commissions or fees for their services and often hold certifications like the CFP to enhance earning potential.

Job description

DLA Piper is, at its core, bold, exceptional, collaborative and supportive. Our people are the backbone, heart and soul of our firm. Wherever you are in your professional journey, DLA Piper is a place you can engage in meaningful work and grow your career. Let's see what we can achieve. Together.
Summary
The FP&A Analyst, working in collaboration with and in support of the firm's strategic initiatives, is a technically skilled, curious, and forward-thinking professional who supports financial planning, forecasting, reporting, and insight-driven decision-making for assigned practice groups and across the firm. This role serves as an analytical liaison between practice group leadership and the FP&A team, connecting business activity to financial results.
The FP&A Analyst brings strong analytical skills, profit-centric business acumen, and excellent written and verbal communication. The role partners with practice groups to deliver clear reporting and financial storytelling that surfaces performance drivers, risks, and opportunities. Through regular engagement, the Analyst translates analysis into actionable insights that inform strategic decisions, improve profitability, and support the firm's long-term growth goals. The Analyst will be directly assigned to one or more practice groups and may rotate across groups for broader development.
Looking forward, this individual supports the firm's adoption of AI in finance and professional services and is passionate about using automation and advanced analytics to improve finance processes. The Analyst is eager to grow into a Citizen Data Scientist-using modern tools, analytics, and (as appropriate) machine learning techniques to analyze data and generate insights. This role reports to the FP&A Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Support practice group and firm reporting requirements by providing informative analytics and insights to leadership, with a focus on actionable recommendations and profitability.

  • Partner with expense management and data/analytics teams to perform profitability analysis that supports the firm's financial goals and initiatives.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial packages for leadership, highlighting key trends, drivers, and variances with clear, actionable insights.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes, improve data quality, and increase reporting efficiency through automation and standardization.
  • Contribute to finance automation efforts, including building and improving simple-language AI agents (e.g., chatbots, cash flow models, validation tools) that support FP&A workflows.
  • Analyze structured and unstructured data to extract insights, support predictive analysis, and improve forecasting accuracy.
  • Perform ad hoc financial analysis and reporting requests, synthesizing findings into clear takeaways and recommended actions.

Desired Skills
Ability to analyze complex financial and operational data and translate results into actionable insights for practice group leadership. Strong communication and financial storytelling skills; comfortable presenting to non-finance stakeholders. Collaborative mindset and ability to partner effectively with cross-functional teams. High energy, eagerness to learn, and interest in applying AI/automation to modernize FP&A processes. Experience in a law firm, financial institution, or professional services organization is a plus. Familiarity with tools such as Python, SQL, Power BI, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Claude, or similar platforms is a plus.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Data Science, Computer Science, or similar field.

Minimum Years of Experience
  • 2 years' experience in finance, accounting, FP&A, or data analytics, preferably with exposure to AI/machine learning initiatives and revenue/expense management. Open to recent graduates with relevant coursework and/or internship experience.
