Job Description

The Division of Information Technology (IT) at Virginia Tech provides computer and technology support and services to Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors, with a focus on enhanced support for teaching and learning; participation and support for research activities; outreach, community partnerships, and advanced networking and communications; and access, security, and maintenance of information systems that allow the university to accomplish its missions. 

The Division of IT at Virginia Tech consists of six primary units: Advanced Research Computing; Governance, Planning and Strategy; User Experience and Engagement; Network Infrastructure and Services; Security and Identity; and Enterprise Solutions and Enabling Technologies. These units are funded through a combination of resources, including Educational and General (E&G), auxiliary enterprises, sponsored programs, foundation funds and service centers.  

The Division of IT business and finance team consists of three areas to support the complex needs of the division: Revenue & Recovery, Purchasing & Payment, and Business Operations. 

Reporting to the Director of Business Operations, the Financial Operations Analyst for the Division of IT at Virginia Tech plays an important role in supporting the financial, strategic, and operational initiatives of the division. This position is responsible for monitoring budgets, preparing financial reports, performing detailed financial analyses, facilitating business reviews, supporting long-term planning, and promoting operational excellence across division business functions. Under the guidance of the Director of Business Operations, the Financial Operations Analyst helps to provide insights and recommendations to Division leadership that drive informed decision-making and ensure efficient use of resources. 

Key responsibilities include: 
Performing accounting and administrative duties for the division, such as submitting journal entries and budget transfers, monitoring costs and budgets, forecasting, trend analysis, reporting, and maintaining compliance with university, state, and federal guidelines regarding financial and administrative matters. 

Assisting Finance and Business Operations leadership on the development of short and long-term business plans and financial models to inform strategic decision making. 

Required Qualifications 

Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field, OR an equivalent level of training and experience that equates to a Bachelor's degree. 
Proficiency in querying and analyzing complex data sets to inform strategic decisions. 
Experience in financial analysis, financial reporting, and process analysis. 
Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. 
Intermediate level skills with current Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel. 
Experience performing fund reconciliations and preparing financial and budgetary reports. 
Demonstrated ability to coordinate business management and support services. 
Strong verbal and written communications abilities for effective collaboration and reporting. 
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines efficiently. 

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience with VT systems (Banner, FINTRACS, MicroStrategy, HokieMart, Emburse, Banner Time Entry, ERS, SUMMIT). 
Proficiency in data analytical tools and financial software systems relevant to business operations and financial planning. 
Advanced skills with the Microsoft Office suite, business intelligence tools, Banner, and project management software. 
Working knowledge of the University's policies and procedures.
