What is a financial controller contract?

A Financial Controller Contract is a temporary or fixed-term position in which a finance professional oversees the accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting functions of an organization. Contracted Financial Controllers are often hired to manage financial operations during periods of transition, such as mergers, staff leave, or organizational restructuring. They ensure accuracy in financial statements, compliance with regulations, and may also help implement new financial systems or processes. This role typically requires strong accounting expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to quickly adapt to new environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial controller contract?

To thrive as a Financial Controller (Contract), you need strong expertise in accounting, financial analysis, and compliance, typically supported by a relevant degree and professional certifications like CPA or ACCA. Advanced proficiency in financial reporting software (such as SAP, Oracle, or QuickBooks) and Excel is also crucial. Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help you lead teams and liaise with stakeholders effectively. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory compliance, and sound decision-making vital for organizational stability during contract engagements.

What are some common challenges a financial controller faces when working on a contract basis, and how can they be addressed?

Financial Controllers working on contract assignments often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to new company cultures, understanding unique financial systems, and meeting tight deadlines for financial reporting. To succeed, it's important to rapidly build relationships with existing finance teams, be proactive in learning company-specific processes, and clarify expectations with stakeholders early on. Leveraging strong communication skills and drawing on experience from previous roles can help contract Financial Controllers integrate efficiently and deliver value from day one.

Job description

Behind every successful project is a financial story that has to be told with precision — and at TCC, the Controller is the one telling it.

We're the premier flooring and tile subcontractor serving multifamily projects across multiple states, and we're looking for an experienced Controller to lead our accounting function and partner directly with our CFO on financial strategy.

About the role:
This position calls for a controller who lives and breathes construction accounting — someone with true command of Percentage of Completion (PoC) revenue recognition and Work-in-Progress (WIP) management. These aren't peripheral skills for us; they're central to how we run the business, and we're looking for someone who can speak to this expertise with real confidence and depth.

What you'll own:
Financial reporting, project accounting, and GAAP compliance
PoC revenue recognition and end-to-end WIP management
Commission calculations based on employment agreements and project profitability
Leading and developing a growing accounting team: Accountant, Project Accounting Manager, and Assistant Controller
Close collaboration with Procurement, Sales, and Operations on budgets, billing, and contract review
Partnering with our CFO to shape and execute financial strategy

What you bring:
✅ Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
✅ 5-7 years of construction accounting experience across A/R and A/P
✅ Demonstrated, hands-on expertise in PoC revenue recognition and WIP schedules
✅ Experience with AIA documents, Dynamics 365 Business Central (or a similar ERP), GCPay, Procore, and/or Textura
✅ Certified payroll experience is a plus
✅ Strong analytical skills, sharp attention to detail, and the ability to lead a team while managing your own workload independently

Company Description

TCC Multi-Family Interiors is a leading provider of flooring and interior solutions for the multi-family housing industry.
