Job description

Summary
The Senior Field Engineer plays a key role in executing layout, line, and grade operations for concrete construction projects. This position ensures accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to design specifications while collaborating closely with field engineers, project managers, and superintendents. The Senior Field Engineer serves as the technical expert in field layout, supporting quality control and continuous improvement across job sites.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Project Execution:
    • Interpret construction documents, drawings, and specifications to develop layout data.
    • Use robotic total stations, GPS, and other layout tools to set lines and grades accurately.
    • Assist with the setup and verification of horizontal and vertical site control.
    • Perform layout for slabs, walls, columns, embeds, vertical control, and other structural elements per project requirements.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Ensure data accuracy and completeness of layout files (CAD, Trimble, etc.).
    • Identify discrepancies in plans and generate RFIs to resolve conflicts.
    • Track and document as-built conditions and layout adjustments.
    • Support quality control through periodic layout checks and coordination with QA/QC teams.
  • Project Support:
    • Work directly with project engineers and superintendents to maintain schedule alignment.
    • Monitor field conditions and proactively address layout issues.
    • Assist with maintaining calibration and functionality of survey equipment.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate field layout logs and ensure timely submission of as-built documentation.
    • Provide feedback to the Field Engineering Manager on field conditions, equipment needs, and team performance.

Required Experience, Education, and Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of field engineering experience in commercial concrete or structural construction.
  • Proficient in CAD software, Trimble, robotic total stations, and GPS layout systems.
  • Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and industry practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must have reliable transportation to the workplace(s)/ job location(s).
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check related to driving.
  • Ability to pass drug screening.
  • Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and in the future.

Preferred Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or related field.
10+ years' experience in a field engineering role at a large concrete contractor or general contractor.
Experience with complex multifamily or mixed-use structures.

Work Environment/Physical Demand
This position primarily works in the field on our projects and occasionally requires travel to the office as needed. This position requires long periods of standing, crouching, walking, and climbing up and down stairs.
Position type, travel, and expected hours of work
  • This is a full-time salaried position, with the majority of the time spent out in the field at our projects.
  • Typical hours will range from 45-50 per week and are subject to change. This role requires working non-typical days and irregular hours based on construction schedules. Due to the critical nature of the role, accepting phone calls even during non-typical workdays and hours is also necessary.
  • Kent Companies' Austin office typically focuses its efforts on projects located south of Waco, Texas, to the Brownsville, Texas, region. Given the state's size, some travel may be necessary on an as-needed basis.
