Senior Specialty Systems Operations Engineer (Mainframe Support)
We are not accepting C2C or 1099 arrangements.
Location: Chandler, AZ (Preferred) | Des Moines, IA
Work Schedule: Flexible 8-hour shift between 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM PST
Employment Type: Contract (Potential for Conversion; No Sponsorship Available)
About the Role
We are seeking experienced Senior Specialty Systems Operations Engineers to join a critical Mainframe Production Support team. This team supports high-impact applications in a specialized, large-scale enterprise environment.
In this role, you will provide advanced production support, troubleshoot complex system issues, and collaborate closely with cross-functional and global teams in a follow-the-sun support model.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Level 2/Level 3 production support for mainframe-based applications, including Automated Credit, Rewards, and Credit Card Hub systems
  • Monitor system performance to ensure stability, availability, and uptime
  • Troubleshoot and resolve failed batch jobs (JCL) and application issues
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions
  • Partner with Production Control teams to restart and recover failed processes
  • Execute ad hoc job requests and respond to business and application team inquiries
  • Maintain and update incident records using tools such as ServiceNow, JIRA, and Confluence
  • Monitor shared mailboxes and ensure timely resolution of production issues
  • Document incidents, resolutions, and create follow-up tasks or stories as needed
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in Systems Engineering, Technology Architecture, or Mainframe Application Support, or equivalent demonstrated experience
  • Strong hands-on experience supporting mainframe applications in a production environment
  • Proficiency with the following technologies:
    • JCL, COBOL, CICS, DB2
    • Scheduling and system tools such as CA7, IDCAMS, Mainview
  • Experience with data/file utilities such as:
    • File Manager, File Analyzer, EZTRIEVE (or similar)
  • Experience using ticketing and documentation tools such as ServiceNow, JIRA, Confluence, or similar platforms
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-volume, production-critical environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a global support model with offshore coordination
  • Familiarity with mainframe monitoring and performance tools
  • Exposure to Dynatrace, MQ, or other monitoring technologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle complex, non-standard environments
Team & Work Environment
  • Collaborative team structure consisting of U.S. and offshore (India-based) resources
  • 24/7 coverage model with daily handoffs between regions
  • U.S.-based team supports daytime operations while offshore resources provide overnight support
  • Frequent coordination with global team members is essential
Additional Information
  • This role requires a specialized mainframe skillset and is not a traditional platform support position
  • Candidates must be adaptable, proactive, and comfortable working in a highly specialized environment
