Job description

Founded in 1846, Texas Democrats continue the march towards a state as great as its promise.

A fair shot for all, that is what drove Democrats to build this great state, and that is what drives us today. A belief that no matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from, or who you love if you work hard in Texas, you can make it.

We believe democratic government exists to achieve as a community, state, and nation what we cannot achieve as individuals.

We believe in equal opportunity, fairness, freedom, family, community, and a responsibility to ourselves and each other. These are the values our elders passed down to us, the values we hope to share with our children, and the values we expect from our elected officials.

The Texas Democratic Party is a movement of millions of Texans coming together to fight for our Texas values. We know our state cannot succeed when the deck is stacked against working Texans and their families.

Assistant General Counsel

Summary :

The Texas Democratic Party is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to support the General

Counsel in providing legal advice across the Party's operations, with a particular focus on voting

rights, election administration, voter protection, and campaign finance compliance. This is a

high-impact role for an attorney who wants substantive long-term legal responsibility inside a

mission-driven organization. In addition to regular interaction with TDP's General Counsel, the

successful applicant will work alongside the Party's Voter Protection, Compliance, Development,

and Communications teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day legal advice on Texas and federal election law, the Texas Election Code, and party rules governing primary administration, ballot access, and candidate filings.
  • Assist with representation of TDP, its Chair and other Democratic Party officials in litigation and appeals.
  • Track and analyze state and federal legislative and litigation developments affecting voting rights and election administration; translate legal analysis into practical guidance for Voter Protection and County Party staff.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, vendor agreements, and organizational policies.
  • Assist in responding to open records requests, subpoenas, and administrative inquiries.
  • Help train and support County Chairs, election workers, and Party staff on legal compliance matters, particularly during the primary and general election cycles.
  • Support internal employment, governance, and risk-management matters as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in Texas (or eligibility for reciprocal/in-house admission, with plans to obtain Texas licensure promptly).
  • 2-5 years of relevant legal experience, including litigation in state and federal court.
  • Knowledge of election or campaign law is a plus but not required.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, actionable guidance for non-lawyers.
  • Ability to work effectively under tight and often unexpected deadlines. This is not a position for someone who seeks a structured and organized workday.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Texas Democratic Party.

Compensation:

$85,000-$125,000 annual salary

The Texas Democratic Party is an equal opportunity employer and it is our policy to recruit, hire, train, promote and administer any and all personnel actions without regard to sex, race, age, color, creed, national origin, religion, economic status, sexual orientation, veteran status, gender identity or expression, ethnic identity or physical disability, or any other legally protected basis. Women and members of historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
