What are field mechanics?

Field mechanics are skilled technicians who travel to different locations to inspect, maintain, and repair equipment or machinery outside of a traditional workshop. They often work on construction sites, farms, oil fields, or other remote areas where equipment is used. Their responsibilities may include diagnosing mechanical problems, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring machines are operating efficiently. Field mechanics must be able to work independently, adapt to changing environments, and have strong problem-solving skills.

How to make 6 figures as a mechanic?

To earn six figures as a field mechanic, gaining specialized skills in high-demand areas such as diesel, heavy equipment, or industrial machinery can increase earning potential. Obtaining certifications like ASE Master Technician and working in high-paying industries or locations also contribute to higher income, along with experience and the ability to perform complex repairs efficiently.

What are some typical challenges faced by Field Mechanics, and how can they prepare for them?

Field Mechanics often work in remote or outdoor locations, which can present unpredictable weather conditions, limited access to tools, and logistical challenges. Adapting quickly to changing environments and diagnosing equipment issues without immediate support are common hurdles. Staying organized, maintaining a well-stocked service vehicle, and developing strong problem-solving skills are crucial for success. Effective communication with clients and team members is also important, as Field Mechanics frequently coordinate repairs and maintenance schedules across different sites.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Field Mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Mechanic, you need strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and typically a vocational diploma or relevant certification in diesel or heavy equipment repair. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, hand and power tools, and maintenance management systems is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help field mechanics work independently and address urgent equipment issues on-site. These skills ensure equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and support safe, efficient field operations.

Is 27 too late to become a mechanic?

Field mechanic roles are open to individuals of various ages, and starting at 27 is not too late. Many mechanics begin their careers after other experiences, and acquiring relevant skills, certifications, and hands-on training can lead to success in the field regardless of age.

What is a field mechanic?

A field mechanic is a technician who repairs and maintains equipment or machinery on-site, often in remote or outdoor locations. They typically work with tools and diagnostic equipment, troubleshooting issues directly at the job site, and may require certifications or specialized training depending on the industry. Their work environment can include industrial sites, construction sites, or transportation facilities.

What is the difference between Field Mechanic vs Equipment Technician?

AspectField MechanicEquipment Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; certifications like ASE often preferredSimilar credentials; certifications like ASE or manufacturer-specific training common
Work EnvironmentOn-site at job sites, outdoors, traveling to various locationsWorkshop or on-site; may involve travel for repairs or maintenance
Industry UsageConstruction, transportation, oil & gas, manufacturingConstruction, industrial, manufacturing sectors
Job FocusDiagnosing, repairing, and maintaining machinery in the fieldMaintaining and repairing equipment, often in a workshop setting

Both roles require technical skills and certifications, but Field Mechanics typically work outdoors and travel to job sites, focusing on diagnosing and repairing machinery in the field. Equipment Technicians often work in workshops or facilities, maintaining equipment in a more stationary environment. The choice depends on your preference for work setting and mobility within the industry.

What is the highest paying mechanic field?

In the mechanic field, specialized roles such as aircraft and industrial machinery mechanics tend to have the highest salaries due to the complexity and safety requirements of their work. Automotive and diesel mechanics generally earn less, but those with advanced certifications or experience in niche areas can command higher wages. Certifications, technical skills, and working in high-demand industries influence earning potential.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Field Mechanic supports Gable's Field Operations team by performing installation, service, loading, vehicle readiness, yard, and field-related work in a safe, professional, and efficient manner. This role is expected to complete assigned mechanic duties with greater independence than a Junior Field Mechanic while continuing to work under the direction of Field Operations leadership and supervising mechanics.
The Field Mechanic is responsible for supporting job execution, maintaining safe work practices, communicating field and quality issues, and helping ensure that tools, materials, vehicles, and work areas are organized and ready for daily field activity. This role also supports helpers and Junior Field Mechanics by reinforcing proper work habits, safe practices, and basic installation methods.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Installation, Service, and Job Execution
  • Perform assigned installation, service, and field mechanic duties safely, accurately, and efficiently based on job requirements, drawings, instructions, field conditions, and direction from supervising mechanics or field leadership.
  • Support daily loading, unloading, staging, vehicle readiness, tool preparation, material organization, and yard or job site setup.
  • Complete hands-on field tasks involving basic installation, fastening, mounting, measuring, assembly, material handling, cleanup, and related mechanic responsibilities.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, fasteners, materials, and equipment properly and safely.
  • Work from aerial equipment when trained, authorized, and required for assigned work.
  • Help maintain clean, organized, and properly stocked vehicles, tools, materials, and work areas to support efficient job execution.
  • Assist with identifying job site constraints, missing materials, installation concerns, equipment issues, or other obstacles that may affect schedule, quality, or safety.
Safety, Quality, and Field Communication
  • Follow and model Gable's Field Operations Code of Conduct, safety procedures, PPE requirements, job site rules, and professional conduct expectations at all times.
  • Perform work with attention to quality, accuracy, fit, finish, material protection, and rework prevention.
  • Communicate product quality concerns, installation issues, job site problems, safety concerns, material shortages, or equipment issues to supervising mechanics, field leadership, or other appropriate internal team members.
  • Use labor, materials, tools, equipment, and company vehicles responsibly.
  • Support efficient completion of assigned work while helping minimize scrap, rework, material waste, tool loss, and vehicle disorganization.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and disciplined work area in shop, yard, vehicle, and field environments.
  • Work cooperatively with Field Mechanics, helpers, Junior Field Mechanics, production team members, project teams, and other internal groups.
Team Support and Operational Readiness
  • Support helpers and Junior Field Mechanics by reinforcing safe work practices, proper tool use, job site conduct, vehicle organization, material handling, and basic installation methods.
  • Provide practical guidance to less experienced field team members while keeping work direction, crew leadership, and final decisions with supervising mechanics and Field Operations leadership.
  • Assist with job preparation by reviewing assigned tasks, confirming needed tools and materials, and helping ensure crews are ready for the workday.
  • Support field team communication by sharing job status, completed work, open issues, and support needs with supervising mechanics or field leadership.
  • Maintain a positive, cooperative attitude and contribute to an efficient team environment.
  • Demonstrate dependability, punctuality, accountability, and professionalism with internal team members, clients, vendors, general contractors, and job site contacts.
  • Continue building technical knowledge, field judgment, and installation capability to support progression toward Senior Field Mechanic responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Basic electrical knowledge or experience required.
  • Basic construction, installation, mechanical, field labor, or related hands-on experience required.
  • Working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, fasteners, construction materials, installation methods, and safe work practices.
  • Ability to perform assigned mechanic duties with a reasonable level of independence while following direction from supervising mechanics and field leadership.
  • Ability to work safely from aerial equipment when trained and authorized.
  • Ability to read and follow basic job instructions, work orders, field notes, drawings, measurements, and verbal direction.
  • Ability to recognize and communicate safety concerns, quality issues, material shortages, equipment problems, field conflicts, or installation obstacles.
  • Ability to support helpers and Junior Field Mechanics by reinforcing proper work habits, tool use, safety practices, and field expectations.
  • Clean driving record required.
  • Strong work ethic, dependability, punctuality, cooperative attitude, and commitment to professional conduct.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a field operations team in shop, yard, vehicle, warehouse, and field environments.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, client service, continuous improvement, and efficient job execution.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
