What Is a Field Application Engineer?

Field application engineers provide technical expertise to help customers find the best product and service solutions for their needs. This position combines engineering knowledge and sales techniques to boost revenue for the company. As a field application engineer, you need to have a thorough background in all the products your company offers to make effective sales pitches. You also maintain relationships with contractors and clients to ensure the smooth installation of equipment and services for the customer and audit internal processes and make recommendations for promoting sales. The qualifications to pursue a career as a field application engineer include a bachelor’s degree in business or an industry-related field.

What is a Field Application Engineer?

A Field Application Engineer (FAE) is a technical professional who works closely with customers to provide support, product demonstrations, and technical expertise on complex products, typically in industries like electronics, semiconductors, or software. FAEs act as a bridge between the engineering teams of a company and its clients, helping to solve technical issues, customize solutions, and ensure successful product implementation. They often travel to customer sites to offer hands-on assistance and gather feedback, which they relay back to their internal teams. The role requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and excellent communication abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Field Application Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Field Application Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering or electronics, strong problem-solving skills, and typically a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with CAD tools, circuit simulation software, and relevant industry certifications such as IPC or Six Sigma are often required. Excellent communication, customer service orientation, and the ability to explain technical concepts clearly make candidates stand out. These skills and qualities are critical for effectively supporting customers, solving technical challenges, and ensuring successful product integration.

What is the difference between Field Application Engineer vs Sales Engineer?

AspectField Application EngineerSales Engineer
