Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the engineer frequently collaborates with construction teams, local authorities, and clients to keep projects on track.

What Does a Fiber Design Engineer Do?

A fiber design engineer, also known as an outside plant engineer (OSP), is a telecommunications engineer who designs optic cable systems. Your responsibilities include fiber design and its allocation, developing route maps for cable and assessing the terrain through which your cabling must pass, creating budgets for projects, determining the types of materials necessary to complete orders, and ensuring you have the right inventory for each project. Your designs and analyses are then passed off to a contractor or project manager who implements your designs.

What is the difference between Fiber Design Engineer vs Optical Network Engineer?

AspectFiber Design EngineerOptical Network Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical/Telecom Engineering, certifications like CCNA, Fiber Optic certificationsBachelor's in Electrical/Telecom Engineering, certifications like CCNA, Fiber Optic certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning fiber optic networks, planning layouts, and specificationsImplementing, troubleshooting, and maintaining optical networks
Industry UsageTelecom, internet service providers, network infrastructureTelecom, data centers, network service providers

While both roles require similar technical credentials and work within the telecom and network industries, a Fiber Design Engineer primarily focuses on designing fiber optic networks, whereas an Optical Network Engineer handles the deployment, troubleshooting, and maintenance of these networks.

How much does a fiber engineer get paid?

The average salary for a fiber design engineer ranges from $70,000 to $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets or with additional certifications in fiber optics and network design.

What are Fiber Design Engineers?

Fiber Design Engineers are professionals who plan, design, and oversee the installation of fiber optic networks for telecommunications, internet, and data services. They create detailed network layouts, select appropriate materials, and ensure designs meet industry standards and client specifications. Their work involves collaborating with construction teams, conducting site surveys, and using specialized software to optimize network performance. Fiber Design Engineers play a crucial role in expanding high-speed internet and communication infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fiber Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fiber Design Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications engineering, fiber optic network design, and a relevant degree such as electrical or civil engineering. Proficiency with design software like AutoCAD, GIS systems, and knowledge of industry standards (e.g., ITU, ANSI) are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These capabilities ensure the accurate planning, implementation, and maintenance of reliable, high-performance fiber optic networks.

How much do fiber engineers make?

Fiber Design Engineers typically earn a median salary ranging from $70,000 to $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets or with advanced technical knowledge of fiber optic systems.

What does a fiber design engineer do?

A fiber design engineer develops and optimizes optical fiber layouts and systems used in telecommunications and data transmission. They use specialized software and testing tools to ensure fiber performance, durability, and compliance with industry standards, often working closely with manufacturing and installation teams.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

While most engineering roles do not reach a $500,000 annual salary, some highly specialized or executive-level engineers, such as senior engineering managers or chief engineers in certain industries, can earn this level of compensation. Factors influencing high salaries include extensive experience, advanced certifications, leadership responsibilities, and working in high-paying sectors like technology or aerospace.

Job description

Job Title: Telecom Fiber Design Drafter

Job Description

This role focuses on drafting and supporting the design of broadband communication and fiber optic network systems. You will use specialized tools such as 3-GIS and AutoCAD to create, update, and quality-check high-level design maps and related documentation for telecom and utility fiber projects. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to a growing engineering team with a strong pipeline of fiber design work and long-term consulting potential.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design process of broadband communication and fiber optic systems using 3-GIS fiber network management software.
  • Originate Rural Utilities Service (RUS) codes on existing High Level Design (HLD) maps in AutoCAD to ensure accurate documentation and compliance with standards.
  • Perform quality control reviews on HLD maps to verify that designs adhere to established telecom and fiber design standards.
  • Prepare detailed splice guides in Microsoft Excel that clearly correlate to individual maps and job names for field and engineering use.
  • Update system maps and design files in 3-GIS and AutoCAD when changes or edits occur to the original HLD design.
  • Collaborate with engineering and field services teams to ensure fiber drafting outputs support project schedules and technical requirements.
  • Learn and apply internal processes and workflows for utility and fiber design projects, incorporating feedback from senior team members.
  • Maintain organized digital files and documentation to support ongoing and future fiber design projects.

Essential Skills

  • Diploma or equivalent education.
  • At least 1 year of experience using 3-GIS software for fiber network or telecom drafting.
  • Hands-on fiber drafting experience, preferably in telecom or utility design environments.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for working with High Level Design (HLD) maps.
  • Ability to perform detailed quality control on design maps and documentation.
  • Competence in using Microsoft Excel to create structured, detailed splice guides.
  • Understanding of fiber optic and telecom design concepts and terminology.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1+ years of ArcGIS experience combined with 3-GIS exposure is preferred.
  • Experience working in telecom, fiber optic, or utility engineering design projects.
  • Comfort working within small, collaborative engineering teams.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving processes and project workloads in a growing organization.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in drafting and documentation.
  • Willingness to grow into a long-term consulting or direct hire role with the team.

Work Environment

You will join a small, close-knit engineering team of approximately 25 people that is actively growing and expanding its fiber design portfolio. The office is currently located in Georgetown, KY and will relocate to Frankfort, KY around mid-August. During the transition from Georgetown to Frankfort, experienced candidates may primarily work from home up to four days per week with one day in-office, shifting to the standard hybrid arrangement once the Frankfort office is fully operational. Core working hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. All necessary equipment is provided, and you will receive training and support from an experienced 3-GIS professional to help you ramp up in the role. The environment is business casual, low key, and collaborative, with a focus on long-term project work and professional growth. The engagement is structured as a 9-month consulting assignment with intent to convert to a direct role, and if direct hire is not immediately possible, it is expected to continue as a long-term contract. One week of paid time off and holiday time (billed back to the client) is available.
