What qualifications do you need to work in IVF?

To work in an IVF laboratory, individuals typically need a relevant degree such as a bachelor's or master's in biology, embryology, or a related field. Additional certifications in embryology or laboratory techniques, along with experience working with reproductive technologies, are often required or preferred.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fertility Lab Technician, and why are they important?

To excel as a Fertility Lab Technician, you need a solid background in biology or biomedical science, attention to detail, and relevant lab experience, often supported by a bachelor's degree in a life science field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, and quality control systems is essential, and certifications such as ESHRE may be preferred. Strong organizational skills, meticulousness, and effective communication help ensure accurate sample handling and collaboration with medical staff. These competencies are crucial for maintaining lab standards, supporting successful fertility treatments, and ensuring patient safety.

What degree do you need to be a fertility specialist?

Fertility specialists are typically reproductive endocrinologists who hold a medical degree (MD or DO) and complete a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, followed by a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Additional certifications and clinical experience in fertility treatments are also important for this role.

What is a fertility lab?

A fertility lab is a specialized medical laboratory where procedures related to assisted reproductive technology (ART), such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), are performed. These labs handle tasks like semen analysis, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo culture, and embryo freezing. Highly trained embryologists and technicians work in fertility labs to ensure optimal conditions for gametes and embryos, increasing the chances of successful pregnancy. The environment is carefully controlled to maintain the health and viability of reproductive cells.

Job description

Laboratory Technician — Endocrinology & Andrology InVia Fertility Specialists · Hoffman Estates, IL · $24–$30/hr Temporary through September 2026, with possibility of permanent opportunity · Full-time (M–F, 7am–3:30pm, every other weekend) · Per diem candidates also considered

You'll play a hands-on role in the clinical lab at one of Illinois' leading fertility practices — performing semen analysis, maintaining regulatory compliance, and helping ensure every result that leaves the lab is accurate, consistent, and quality-checked.

What You'll Do

  • Perform semen analysis and provide backup support for IUI sperm preparations
  • Maintain lab inventory and supplies for the Endocrinology and Andrology department
  • Conduct quality assurance tests and maintain accurate documentation to meet OSHA, CAP, AAB, and CLIA standards
  • Troubleshoot and maintain lab equipment, serving as the internal liaison for related vendors
  • Train lab personnel on OSHA regulations, equipment use, and procedures
  • Maintain detailed cryopreservation records for sperm storage

What We're Looking For

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in a biological science (Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related field)
  • Hands-on laboratory experience — you're comfortable working independently in a clinical lab setting
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Clear communicator who works well as part of a close-knit clinical team
  • Comfortable with a rotating weekend schedule (every other weekend shared among the lab team)

What We Offer

  • $24–$30/hr, commensurate with experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • PTO, 401(k), HSA & FSA
  • Short-term disability, critical illness coverage, and life insurance — including a complimentary policy for all employees
  • A mission-driven team that genuinely cares about the patients they serve

Our compassionate, highly trained staff understand the emotional and physical journey of fertility treatment, and we strive to ensure every patient feels comfortable, respected, and empowered. We're a team that shows up fully for our patients — and for each other — because we know that behind every lab result is a family hoping for good news. Our goal is to help each patient achieve a timely and successful pregnancy.

Compensation: $24–$30/hr Temporary position through September 2026. Full-time and per diem candidates welcome.
