How much do ferc jobs pay per year?
What is a FERC job?
A FERC job typically refers to a position at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), a U.S. agency that regulates interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil. Jobs at FERC can range from engineering and legal roles to environmental and economic analysis. Employees work on policies, compliance, and enforcement related to energy markets and infrastructure. These positions often require expertise in regulatory law, energy markets, or technical fields like electrical engineering. FERC jobs offer opportunities to shape national energy policies and ensure fair and efficient energy use.
What are some common challenges professionals face in FERC-related roles?
Professionals working in FERC-related positions often encounter the challenge of navigating complex and frequently changing federal regulations that govern the energy industry. Managing tight deadlines for regulatory filings and staying updated on evolving compliance requirements require strong organizational and analytical skills. Team members must also collaborate closely with legal experts, engineers, and external agencies to ensure projects adhere to both legal and technical standards. Successfully overcoming these challenges calls for adaptability, continuous learning, and effective communication across multidisciplinary teams.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ferc position, and why are they important?
A professional working in a role related to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) typically needs a strong background in energy regulation, policy analysis, and legal or engineering expertise, often with a relevant degree such as in law, public policy, or engineering. Familiarity with FERC regulations, compliance policies, and specialized software such as regulatory databases and legal research tools is critical. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills help individuals excel in this environment. These skills are vital for ensuring regulatory compliance, effective policy development, and clear interaction with various stakeholders in the energy sector.

- Partner with legal counsel, project management, engineering, and construction teams to support regulatory strategy, risk management, and defensible permitting outcomes.
- Develop and manage integrated permitting schedules, budgets, and scopes aligned with FERC certificates, permit timelines, construction sequencing, and capital delivery milestones
- Oversee environmental field investigations, resource surveys, and monitoring programs, including management of consultants, contractors, and technical deliverables.
- Coordinate preparation and review of environmental resource reports and technical inputs supporting FERC applications and data requests.
- Lead permitting and agency coordination and support negotiations of permit conditions and compliance requirements under applicable federal and state programs, including CWA Sections 404 and 401, ESA Section 7, NHPA Section 106, and Rivers and Harbors Act Sections 10 and 408.
- Represent the company at agency meetings, public hearings, and community engagements, effectively communicating environmental requirements and project commitments.
- Track and manage environmental conditions and commitments associated with FERC certificates and agency permits.
- Support post-certificate compliance and construction-phase environmental coordination.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources Planning, or related field.
- Seven or more years of experience supporting environmental permitting or compliance for interstate natural gas or linear infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience supporting FERC-regulated projects, including NEPA review and certificate proceedings.
- Strong working knowledge of NGA, NEPA, CWA, ESA, and NHPA requirements.
- Experience coordinating with federal and state agencies on complex permitting efforts.
- Ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical guidance for engineering and construction teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple high-profile capital projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience serving as an environmental lead on large-diameter pipeline projects.
- Previous experience solving complex regulatory, permitting and compliance issues for major pipeline infrastructure and construction projects.
- Expertise in assessing policy and regulatory issues to support development of corporate reporting and policy positions
