To thrive as a Fellow Intern, you need a solid educational background in the relevant field, strong research or analytical abilities, and a willingness to learn. Familiarity with productivity tools such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and sometimes specialized software or databases is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are essential soft skills that help you integrate into teams and handle diverse tasks. These skills are important because they enable you to contribute effectively, gain valuable experience, and demonstrate your potential for future roles.

How does a Fellow Intern typically collaborate with full-time team members and mentors during their internship?

As a Fellow Intern, you will frequently work alongside full-time team members and assigned mentors on active projects, participating in regular meetings, brainstorming sessions, and feedback reviews. This collaborative structure is designed to help you quickly integrate into the team's workflow, learn from experienced professionals, and contribute meaningfully to ongoing initiatives. Interns are often encouraged to ask questions, seek guidance, and provide input during discussions, fostering both professional growth and team cohesion. Effective communication and a willingness to learn are key to building strong working relationships during your fellowship.

What is a Fellow Intern?

A Fellow Intern is typically a student or recent graduate who participates in a structured internship program, often as part of a fellowship. These positions usually provide hands-on experience in a specific field, sometimes with added benefits like mentorship, networking opportunities, or stipends. Fellow Interns work on real projects, develop professional skills, and gain insight into their chosen industry. The role is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional work, helping individuals build their resumes and expand their career prospects.

Job description

COVER LETTER REQUIRED

  • Athena will reimburse the cost of the EPPP exam (~$700)

AthenaPsych is a New York State mental health-approved provider of community mental health services for children, adults, and families with behavioral and emotional challenges. We specialize in individual and group psychotherapy for clients with a focus on trauma-informed care. Athena is dedicated to improving the quality and accessibility of mental health care for all, especially individuals from underserved communities.

Here at Athena, we pride ourselves on hiring a diverse group of mental health clinicians and staff who are passionate and dedicated to improving our clients' overall emotional well-being. We provide both in-person and telehealth services for our clients.

Athena's psychology postdoctoral fellowship aims to prepare clinicians seeking well-rounded careers in outpatient settings and with diverse populations. Fellows are based in outpatient settings where they engage in the evaluation and treatment (individual and group-based) of clients presenting with a wide range of diagnoses. This fellowship is ideal for an individual with an interest in supervision or with a career goal of becoming a training director, as this position will be heavily involved in Athena's large clinical internship program.

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including social workers, psychiatrists, nurses, peers, and other clinicians, to develop and implement treatment plans and provide coordinated care.
  • Provide optional supplemental clinical supervision to MSW/MHC interns secondary to their primary supervision meetings to support additional clinical development.
  • Deliver 2 didactic presentations during the year to clinicians during case conferences
  • Complete a quality improvement project under the supervision of the clinical director
  • Assist in facilitating intern seminars and in the development of intern programming.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Clinical Director and Athena leadership.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship prior to post-doc start date.
  • Must have completed all coursework and requirements towards Ph.D. or Psy.D in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. Degree conferral is required prior to official fellowship start date.
  • Obtained NYS psychology limited permit.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based psychology practices.
  • Knowledgeable in NYS Mandated Reporting requirements
  • Knowledgeable in HIPAA Regulations and other relevant privacy statutes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Previous experience using electronic Medical Record systems and documentation standards.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with industry trends.
  • Cultural competence and the ability to work with diverse populations
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Word, Excel, G-Suite, and other software/applications.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required.
$55,000 - $60,000 a year
