Job description

Overview

The Underwriting Manager - Farm Mutual Reinsurance is responsible for operational underwriting of a mature, regional farm mutual reinsurance specialty portfolio. This role is critical to the underwriting activities relative to management of the reinsurance risk portfolio.   

This position is an assigned territory of the states of North and South Dakota and the North Western part of Iowa. The ideal candidate lives within the assigned territory and frequently travels within the assigned states. Please note that candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. without Grinnell Mutual sponsorship.

Responsibilities
  • Underwrites a profitable portfolio of farm mutual reinsurance business by developing short- and long-term goals, strategies, and processes.
  • Accountable for underwriting property and casualty farm mutual regional reinsurance business, deploying capital and maximizing profits.
  • Identifies opportunities within territory portfolio that grows the business profitably. Utilizes catastrophe modeling and actuarial pricing teams to evaluate renewals and submissions.
  • Underwrites submissions/renewals, prices reinsurance programs, provides quotes, authorizes contracts and maintains relationships.
  • Provides expertise to members regarding business operations, risk management, and viability.
  • Attends internal and external meetings, including committee assignments and contributes to meetings by asking questions or presenting information verbally or in written form.
  • Cultivates culture of continuous improvement within the division by seeking opportunities to improve processes and efficiencies.
  • Remains current on industry trends, best practices, regulations, and profession. Applies knowledge to achieve optimal business results.
  • Ensures mutual partners have a sound business model to meet Grinnell Mutual standards and rates are consistent with contract obligations.
  • Responsible for executing all aspects of reinsurance underwriting and member consultation.
  • Significant projects, predictive analysis, and reinsurance relationships. Interacts with the brokers, division leader and cross division leaders.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with five (5) years of property casualty reinsurance related experience and a demonstrated skill set in best practices related to the reinsurance industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with brokers and farm mutual regional accounts is preferred.
  • Industry designations preferred (eg. ARe, CPCU, CFA, CPA, FCAS).
  • Experience underwriting Property and Casualty Insurance, Property Catastrophe, Property Aggregate Excess, Per Risk, Quota Share and Multi-Line Excess.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate risk and potential profitability of accounts.
  • Experience with property reinsurance pricing methods including exposure and experience analysis for catastrophe and non-catastrophe perils.
  • Knowledge of third-party catastrophe modeling software products, their applicability to underwriting reinsurance business and evolution over time.
  • Knowledge of reinsurance contracts and general reinsurance terminology and processes.
  • Advanced knowledge and functional use of Excel for data analytics, Power BI software, or other simulation software.
  • Demonstratrd leadership skills and is a strong team player. Leads as a role model for division employees and the company, developing and executing corporate goals.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, to professionally present information to a variety of groups and forums and present on topics as requested.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to make effective decisions using personal judgment, experience, facts, and figures to resolve problems and make decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to broker consensus by involving stakeholders in the decision-making process to maintain relationships and mutual understanding.
  • Ability to work effectively and relate well with internal and external customers. Ability to exhibit a professional manner in dealing with and working to maintain constructive working relationship by utilizing good interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work in a harmonious manner with clients, co-employees and supervisor.
  • Must posses working knowledge of basic office equipment. Computer skills must include basic skills in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to fleet safety policy. Ability to travel to customer's offices or meeting sites. Overnight travel is required occasionally.
Compensation

  • The Underwriting Manager - Farm Mutual Reinsurance may be required to work outside of normal business hours including occasional weekends to meet deadlines associated with the position.
  • The position can operate within a typical office setting located in an office or in a remote home office. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The position requires an individual to sit for long periods of time. The position may require frequent and extended time on the telephone and visual acuity to work on the computer for extended periods of time.
  • This role has frequent external customer contact with insurers.
  • Frequently works with all levels of employees in the organization.
