Job description

Direct Counsel is seeking an Intake Attorney to join a growing plaintiff-side employment law practice. This role is focused exclusively on evaluating and screening individual employment claims and is not a class action position. The ideal candidate will have strong employment law knowledge, excellent issue-spotting abilities, and a client-centered approach to guiding prospective clients through the initial stages of the legal process.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who enjoys legal analysis, client interaction, and evaluating potential cases while helping individuals understand and protect their workplace rights.

ResponsibilitiesClient Intake & Case Evaluation
  • Conduct comprehensive intake interviews with prospective clients
  • Evaluate potential employment law claims and determine legal viability
  • Analyze workplace disputes involving:
    • Wrongful termination
    • Workplace discrimination
    • Sexual harassment
    • Retaliation
    • Wage and hour violations
    • Disability accommodation issues
    • Leave and medical-related employment claims
Legal Analysis
  • Apply federal and California employment laws to assess potential claims
  • Identify legal issues, strengths, weaknesses, and potential damages
  • Prepare detailed case evaluations and legal summaries for review by senior attorneys
  • Analyze factual and legal issues to determine whether matters meet case acceptance criteria
Client Communication
  • Educate prospective clients regarding their legal rights and available options
  • Explain legal concepts and processes in a clear and understandable manner
  • Maintain a professional, empathetic, and client-focused approach throughout the intake process
  • Guide prospective clients through next steps and case onboarding procedures
Team Collaboration
  • Work closely with intake coordinators, paralegals, and attorneys to ensure efficient case processing
  • Manage a high volume of intake calls and inquiries
  • Maintain accurate documentation and case records
  • Coordinate referrals for matters that fall outside the firm's practice areas
Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Active California Bar membership in good standing
  • 1โ€“3+ years of employment law or plaintiff-side litigation experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of federal and California employment laws, including:
    • Title VII
    • ADA
    • FMLA
    • ADEA
    • FLSA
    • California Labor Code
    • FEHA
  • Excellent legal analysis and issue-spotting abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to explain complex legal concepts to clients in a practical and accessible manner
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to manage a high volume of client inquiries while maintaining professionalism and empathy
Preferred Qualifications
  • Plaintiff-side employment law experience
  • Experience conducting client intake interviews
  • Familiarity with case management and intake software platforms
  • Experience evaluating employment-related claims and damages
Compensation & Benefits
  • Compensation Range: $130,000 โ€“ $180,000
