The Role

The Senior Upholsterer at Found Rental Co.'s Fab Lab plays a critical role in bringing custom furniture pieces, rental inventory, and creative concepts to life. This position combines technical skill, artistry, and craftsmanship to create, restore, and maintain one-of-a-kind furniture pieces that reflect Found's commitment to quality and design.

Working closely with craftsmen, designers, and fabrication team members, the Upholsterer is responsible for building, repairing, and refinishing upholstered furniture ranging from lounge seating and banquettes to custom-built pieces and specialty event furnishings.

This is not a production-line role. Every project is unique and requires attention to detail, creativity, and pride in craftsmanship.

Key Responsibilities

Upholstery & Furniture Fabrication

  • Upholster new and custom-built furniture including chairs, benches, banquettes, bars, headboards, lounge seating, and specialty pieces
  • Repair, restore, and reupholster existing inventory within Found's rental collection
  • Measure, cut, and install fabric, foam, batting, webbing, and other upholstery materials
  • Create patterns and templates as needed for custom and repeat builds
  • Ensure all finished pieces meet Found's standards for quality, durability, and appearance

Repair & Restoration

  • Evaluate existing furniture and determine appropriate repair or restoration methods
  • Replace worn or damaged upholstery components
  • Collaborate with the Fab Lab team to restore antique and specialty inventory while maintaining its integrity
  • Identify opportunities to extend the life and usability of inventory through thoughtful repairs

Workshop Operations

  • Operate sewing machines, industrial staplers, foam cutters, and upholstery tools safely and effectively
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and efficient upholstery workstation
  • Assist with inventory management of upholstery supplies and materials
  • Communicate material needs and shortages to the Fab Lab Manager

Collaboration & Creative Problem Solving

  • Partner with craftsmen, and fabrication team members on custom projects
  • Contribute creative solutions for unique builds and challenging design requests
  • Support product development and custom fabrication initiatives
  • Assist with special projects and workshop priorities as needed

Safety & Quality Standards

  • Follow all workshop safety protocols and PPE requirements
  • Maintain high standards of craftsmanship and attention to detail
  • Ensure all projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to specifications
  • Support overall shop organization and cleanliness
Qualifications
  • Proven upholstery experience in custom, residential, commercial, hospitality, or furniture environments
  • Strong understanding of upholstery techniques, materials, and construction methods
  • Ability to read design plans, sketches, and technical drawings
  • Experience operating upholstery tools and equipment safely
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Comfortable working in a fabrication shop or warehouse environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a furniture fabrication or custom build environment
  • Knowledge of textiles, fabric performance, and durability
  • Pattern-making and template creation experience
  • Experience working with antique furniture restoration
  • Passion for creative problem-solving and custom fabrication
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work with tools for extended periods
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on fabrication environment
