Department Overview:
The Fab Lab and Software Instructional Technician team supports hands-on fabrication, coding instruction, and student learning for CSUDH's Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE). Technicians are responsible for leading instruction, operating and maintaining fabrication equipment, assisting with coding curriculum delivery, and mentoring students across various STEAM Programs. They serve as role models for K-16 learners and community participants, helping build STEM competencies and 21st-century skills.
Position Information
The position is a part-time, paid internship. Our goal is to provide our interns with the real-life experience necessary to execute and manage projects that utilize fabrication technology. We intend to promote the development of new knowledge and research, with an emphasis on serving communities that are underrepresented in STEM disciplines. The hourly rate is $18.00 - $20.00, depending on experience. See position levels below.
Employment at Toro Auxiliary Partners is on an at-will basis and can be terminated by either an employee or Toro Auxiliary Partners at any time, with or without cause or advance notice. Permanent status can neither be obtained nor granted.
General Requirements for All Levels:
  • Possesses and demonstrates a proactive, collaborative, and solution-oriented work ethic.
  • Must be available to work on Saturdays.
  • Attend and complete the required training sessions (Apple Teacher, Everyone Can Code, etc.).
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Adhere to CISE mission and professional standards.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of students and community members.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and TB test.
  • Reliable transportation.

Position Levels:
Level 1: Fab Lab and Software Technician I
• Pay Rate: $18/hour
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Learn the use of software, programs, applications, and equipment to help participants.
  • Lead hands-on instruction in 3D Printing, Vinyl Cutting, and Coding activities.
  • Operate and assist students with fabrication equipment.
  • Set up and break down equipment and learning stations.
  • Support students during coding clubs, fabrication workshops, and hands-on STEAM activities.
  • Maintain, clean, and monitor basic equipment and workspaces.
  • Explain the functions of equipment and related software to participants.
  • Complete basic troubleshooting and routine maintenance.
  • Transfer and set up fabrication equipment at school and community event sites.

Qualifications
  • Current undergraduate student in good academic standing.
  • Strong interest in STEM education, fabrication technologies, and coding.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Level 2: Fab Lab and Software Technician II
• Pay Rate: $19/hour
Primary Responsibilities:
Includes all responsibilities of Level 1 Technician, plus:
  • Lead instruction in CNC machines, Laser Cutters, and Roland printers.
  • Mentor and support Level 1 technicians.
  • Lead setup, breakdown, and operation of complex equipment at events.
  • Teach peers and students advanced software and equipment functions.
  • Coordinate logistics and assist in the procurement of supplies.
  • Develop and update instructional checklists and training materials.
  • Provide feedback and assist in the assessment of Level 1 staff.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience as Level 1 Technician or equivalent.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience mentoring peers.
  • Advanced skills with fabrication equipment and coding.

Level 3: Learning Assistant (Lead Technician)
• Pay Rate: $20/hour
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Includes all responsibilities of Level 1 and Level 2 Technicians, plus:Serve as classroom Learning Assistants, leading instruction for Dual Enrollment courses and Micro-Credentials.
  • Lead coding and fabrication instruction sessions independently.
  • Mentor and supervise Level 1 and Level 2 technicians.
  • Plan and deliver workshops on advanced coding and fabrication topics.
  • Support event logistics, curriculum review, and instructional quality control.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate student (junior or senior standing) or recent graduate.
  • Strong background in Computer Science, STEM education, or related fields.
  • Experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring in academic settings.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, organization, and teamwork.
