What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Fab Lab Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Fab Lab Manager, you need expertise in digital fabrication, prototyping, and engineering principles, often supported by a degree in engineering, design, or related fields. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D printers, CNC machines, and remote collaboration platforms is typically required, along with certifications in fabrication safety or equipment operation. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help manage virtual teams and facilitate client or student engagement. These skills ensure efficient lab operations, high-quality project outcomes, and effective remote support for users.

How does a Remote Fab Lab technician typically collaborate with other team members and clients despite working remotely?

Remote Fab Lab technicians often use digital collaboration tools such as CAD software, cloud-based project management platforms, and video conferencing to coordinate with designers, engineers, and clients. Regular virtual meetings and shared documentation ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals and progress. While hands-on fabrication happens at local or distributed sites, technicians provide remote support, troubleshoot issues, and sometimes guide users through processes via live video or detailed instructions. This collaborative approach helps maintain high project quality and timely delivery, even when working from different locations.

What is a Remote Fab Lab?

A Remote Fab Lab is a digital fabrication laboratory that allows users to access and operate fabrication equipment, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines, from a distance using online interfaces and remote control technologies. These labs make it possible for individuals and organizations to prototype and manufacture products without being physically present in the lab. Remote Fab Labs are especially useful for education, research, and innovation, providing greater accessibility and collaboration opportunities across different locations.

What is the difference between Remote Fab Lab vs Remote Maker?

AspectRemote Fab LabRemote Maker
CredentialsTypically requires technical certifications or training in fabrication, digital design, or engineeringOften self-taught or holds basic technical skills, with some certifications in DIY or digital fabrication
Work EnvironmentOnline platform providing access to digital fabrication tools, virtual collaboration, and project supportOnline community or platform focused on DIY projects, prototyping, and creative making
Industry UsageUsed by educational institutions, makerspaces, and fabrication labs for remote access and collaborationPopular among hobbyists, DIY enthusiasts, and independent creators

Remote Fab Lab and Remote Maker both involve digital fabrication and online collaboration, but Remote Fab Lab typically offers more structured access to fabrication tools and technical resources, often within educational or institutional settings. Remote Maker is more community-driven, emphasizing personal projects and creative making. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right role or platform for your fabrication and making interests.

Job description

If you're looking for a special place to build or grow your career, you've found it. Whether you're an experienced professional, a recent college graduate or somewhere in between, IDEX is a place where you can apply your existing skills and learn new ones in an environment where you can make an impact.

With interesting opportunities in engineering, marketing, sales, supply chain, operations, HR, finance, and more across more than 40 diverse businesses around the globe, chances are, we have something special for you.

This is a REMOTE position with some travel.

We are seeking a visionary Semicon Technologist to lead our technical roadmap and engineering strategy. This individual will serve as the primary architect for our cross-functional technology stacks, overseeing the integration of advanced materials, precision optics, and complex manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate possesses deep domain expertise across the entire wafer fabrication lifecycle from lithography, deposition and etch to advanced metrology and inspection.

Key Responsibilities:

-Technology Roadmap: Define and execute the long-term technical vision, ensuring alignment with Moore's Law progressions and next-generation node requirements (GAAFET, High-NA EUV, E-beam inspection, etc.).

-Multidisciplinary Systems Leadership: Spearhead efforts across the full fab spectrum, integrating plasma physics (Etch), atomic-scale surface chemistry (ALD, CVD) lithography, and ion implant. You will harmonize these with the fluid dynamics of CMP and the advanced photonics required for high-sensitivity metrology and inspection.

-Advanced Manufacturing Oversight: Direct the implementation of specialized joining technologies, including Electron Beam (E-beam) welding, Laser welding, and vacuum-tight ceramic-to-metal bonding.

-Materials Science Strategy: Oversee the selection and application of high-performance ceramics and refractory metals used in harsh chamber environments.

-Photonics and Precisions Optics: Drive the development of high-performance optical trains and sensor architectures, specializing in thin-film coatings (anti-reflective, high-reflectivity, and filter coatings) for DUV/EUV and IR spectrums. This includes overseeing the integrations of precision optomechanical assemblies, ensuring environmental stability through advanced joining and bonding of dissimilar materials.

-Technology Collaboration and Strategic Ecosystems: Serve as the primary technical bridge between internal business units, unifying platform capabilities to ensure modularity and scalability. In parallel, work with the team on high-level external partnerships with OEMS and global research consortia to anticipate next-generation node requirements.

Preferred Knowledge Base:

Process Equipment | Etch (ALE/RIE), Deposition (ALD/CVD/PVD), CMP, and Ion Implantation | Metrology & Inspection | CD-SEM, Scatterometry, Dark-field/Bright-field inspection, and EUV optics. | Hardware & Physics | Precision optics, vacuum science, and RF power delivery systems. | Materials & Joining | Technical ceramics (Al2O3, AlN), E-beam/Laser welding, and thermal spray coatings |

Qualifications:

-Education: Ph.D. or Master's degree in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

-Experience: 15+ years in the semiconductor industry, with at least 5 years in a senior technical leadership or "Fellow" level role.

-Subject Matter Expertise: Proven track record of taking complex hardware from "lab to fab," with specific experience in high-vacuum environments and precision optomechanical systems.

-Soft Skills: An ability to translate "deep tech" concepts into business value for stakeholders and customers.
