What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FCL coordinator?

To thrive as an FCL Coordinator, you need a solid understanding of international shipping procedures, logistics documentation, and freight regulations, often supported by experience in supply chain or logistics roles. Familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS), cargo tracking software, and customs clearance platforms is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex shipments and coordinating with various stakeholders. These skills ensure the efficient, timely, and compliant movement of containerized cargo across global supply chains.

What is an FCL?

FCL stands for Full Container Load, which refers to the transportation of goods where an entire shipping container is used by a single shipper for their cargo. Jobs in FCL typically involve logistics coordination, freight forwarding, and supply chain management, ensuring that containers are efficiently packed, shipped, and delivered. Professionals in this area may work for shipping lines, logistics companies, or freight forwarders, handling tasks such as booking shipments, tracking containers, and managing documentation. FCL is a preferred method for businesses with large shipments, as it offers security, cost-effectiveness, and direct shipping routes.

Both Fcl and Freight Coordinator roles operate within the logistics and shipping industry, often sharing similar credentials and work environments. While Fcl specialists focus specifically on managing full container load shipments, Freight Coordinators handle a broader range of freight types, including FCL and LCL. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers identify the right role based on specific shipping needs.

How does an FCL coordinator typically collaborate with freight forwarders and shipping lines?

As an FCL coordinator, you will frequently liaise with freight forwarders, shipping lines, and internal logistics teams to manage the end-to-end process of container shipments. This collaboration includes negotiating booking slots, ensuring accurate documentation, tracking shipment status, and promptly resolving any issues such as delays or customs holds. You’ll also work closely with customer service and warehouse teams to ensure timely loading and unloading, making strong communication and organizational skills essential for success in this role.

At FCL, we don’t just build buildings, we build communities, careers, relationships, and trust. As an MEP Superintendent, you’ll play a critical role in delivering complex, mission-critical data center projects. You’ll lead field execution, coordinate highly technical MEP systems, and ensure every phase of construction is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

If you thrive in fast-paced, high-spec environments and love turning complex plans into reality, this is your opportunity to make an impact.

Why Join FCL Builders?

  • Build Industry-Leading Projects: Lead the delivery of cutting-edge, mission-critical data center facilities.
  • Become an Employee Owner: Partner with experienced professionals who are invested in your success.
  • Lead From the Field: Take ownership of site execution and drive real results every day.
  • Supportive Culture: We believe in teamwork, accountability, and having each other’s back.
  • Great People, Great Workplace: FCL is proud to be a Great Place to Work–Certified company where culture comes first.

What You’ll Do:

Pre-Construction & Planning

  • Review contract requirements, drawings, specifications, and MEP scopes to understand project expectations.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager, Project Engineer, and other Superintendents on site setup, sequencing, and logistics.
  • Conduct site walks to document existing conditions and assess preconstruction risks.
  • Coordinate long-lead item planning, trade mobilization strategies, and permitting requirements with AHJs.
  • Review drawings and scopes in BIM to ensure clash-free, constructible designs.

Project Execution & Field Leadership

  • Lead daily site operations and coordinate all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, low-voltage, and building automation systems.
  • Track work progress, document T&M costs, and support forecasting and cost control efforts.
  • Lead daily and weekly subcontractor coordination meetings.
  • Proactively identify issues or delays and recommend mitigation plans.
  • Conduct regular field inspections to verify installation accuracy, quality, and design compliance.
  • Maintain detailed daily logs, as-built documentation, and support RFIs.
  • Plan and manage MEP schedules, commissioning, sequencing, and BIM-based installation.

Team, Client & Safety Leadership

  • Serve as the on-site face of FCL, fostering strong relationships with owners, consultants, inspectors, and trade partners.
  • Communicate daily with field teams to align scope, schedule, and responsibilities.
  • Champion jobsite safety, lead toolbox talks and JHAs and enforce all site-specific safety protocols.
  • Maintain compliance with building codes, facility rules, and client safety requirements.

What We’re Looking For:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 10 years of project supervision experience in an industrial or large-scale commercial construction environment, including completion of at least one mission-critical project.
  • Strong working knowledge of construction sequencing, subcontractor management, and quality control.
  • Deep understanding of MEP systems, critical infrastructure (UPS, generators, CRAHs, BMS), and commissioning processes.
  • Experience with daily reporting, field coordination, and issue resolution on active job sites.

Nice to Have:

  • OSHA 30 Certification.
  • Proficiency with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, BIM, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with IST protocols and commissioning coordination.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary, bonus structure
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Career development and mentorship programs
  • Comprehensive and competitive benefits (health, dental, vision and so much more!)
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • An inclusive, collaborative culture where your voice matters
