F1 Students information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an F1 Student in the United States, and why are they important?

To thrive as an F1 Student, you need strong academic skills, English language proficiency, and a valid F1 visa supported by acceptance to a SEVP-certified institution. Familiarity with systems like SEVIS, campus learning management systems (e.g., Canvas or Blackboard), and maintaining visa compliance is essential. Time management, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for balancing academic demands and integrating into a new cultural environment. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maintaining legal status, achieving academic success, and making the most of the international student experience.

What are F1 students?

F1 students are international students who are pursuing academic studies or language training programs in the United States under an F-1 visa. This non-immigrant visa category is specifically for students enrolled in full-time educational programs at accredited institutions. F1 students must maintain a full course load and comply with visa regulations, including restrictions on employment and reporting requirements. The F-1 visa allows students to remain in the U.S. for the duration of their studies and, in some cases, participate in practical training opportunities related to their field of study.

What types of on-campus employment opportunities are typically available to F1 students, and how do they fit within a student's academic schedule?

F1 students are generally permitted to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during academic terms and full-time during breaks. Common on-campus jobs include roles in the library, dining services, research labs, or administrative offices. These positions are designed to accommodate student schedules, often offering flexible hours that fit around classes and study commitments. Working on campus also helps F1 students build professional skills and connect with faculty and peers, which can be valuable for both academic and career growth.

Job description

Host Family - F1 International High School Students

We are a thriving international education organization supporting students from 30+ countries. Weโ€™re seeking caring, reliable host families to join our community as Fullโ€‘Time Hosts (5โ€“10 months), Shortโ€‘Term Hosts (1โ€“6 weeks), or Backโ€‘Up Hosts (a few days to a few weeks).

Host Families provide a safe, welcoming home and help students adjust to life in the U.S., build confidence, and reach their potential. This is a culturalโ€‘exchange opportunityโ€”not traditional employment.

Key Responsibilities

โ€ข Be 25+ and provide an Englishโ€‘speaking home

โ€ข Offer nutritious meals

โ€ข Provide a private or shared bedroom

โ€ข Maintain a safe, stable, caring environment

โ€ข Ensure transportation to school (bus, bike, walk, or dropโ€‘off)

Household Guidelines

Families set clear expectations around meals, guests, curfew, electronics, chores, and routines to help students feel secure and supported.

Program Support

โ€ข Dedicated coordinator with monthly checkโ€‘ins

โ€ข 24/7 emergency support

โ€ข Backโ€‘up host families for vacations or emergencies

โ€ข Strong partnership with local schools

Compensation

$1100/month (shared room)

$1500/month (private room)

Direct deposit provided.

While families receive a stipend, the heart of hosting is cultural exchangeโ€”sharing daily life, building connections, and supporting a young personโ€™s journey.
