About the Permian
Straddling West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico, the Permian is the most prolific oil and gas basin in America and the engine behind the country's energy renaissance. Nationally, it provides about 40% of oil and 15% of gas production and plays a critical role in making the U.S. a leading energy exporter.
The merger of ExxonMobil and Pioneer creates an Unconventional business with the largest, high-return development potential in the Permian Basin. The combined company's more than 1.4 million net acres in the Delaware and Midland basins have an estimated 16 billion barrels of oil equivalent resource. In 2023, we produced, on average 612,000 barrels a day in the Permian Basin, and we're aiming to produce 1 million barrels per day from our Permian assets by the end of 2027. Investments in infrastructure from New Mexico to the Gulf Coast enhance logistics and integrated value. We've advanced gathering and processing facilities, including the Cowboy central delivery point. Integration maximizes resource development through to fuels, lubes, and chemicals. What role you will play in our team
  • We are looking for an experienced Automation Engineer to join the Permian Basin engineering organization.
  • The position will be situated in Midland, TX.
  • The role will have opportunities to work in the Automation, Instrumentation, Controls, and Electrical disciplines by supporting Permian Basin field operation teams directly, and through multi-discipline projects.

What you will do
  • Focus on continuous improvement of the operating assets through PLC automation improvement and new technology opportunities.
  • Develop and execute brownfield improvement projects and initiatives with an IC&E, and Automation majority scope, from concept select through sustainment
  • Oversee the installation and setup of IC&E equipment and systems, ensuring they function correctly and meet safety and regulatory standards.
  • Participates in area Risk Assessment, HAZOP's, Hazard Hunts, Critical Operating Parameter Reviews.
  • Participate in incident investigations.
  • Support Opportunity management-identification of opportunities and development of scope of work for projects.
  • Ensure that instrumentation, electrical and control systems adhere to safety and environmental regulations.
  • Collect and analyze data from instrumentation, medium/low voltage electrical and control systems to optimize processes and identify areas for improvement and optimization.
  • Recommend and implement upgrades to instrumentation, electrical and/or control systems to keep them up to date with industry standards and technology.
  • SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment): Implementing and enforcing safety protocols and procedures to protect personnel, equipment, and the environment.
  • Provide operations support for changes, repairs & alterations of all plant pressure equipment leveraging off Management of Change process.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams, including facilities engineers, machinery engineers, operations and maintenance personnel, to achieve project objectives.
  • Provide shutdown engineering support.
  • Provide brownfield upgrade/greenfield projects engineering support. Preparation / review of IC&E engineering deliverables (one-line diagrams, Cause & Effect diagrams, Controls Narrative, wiring diagrams, installation details, instrument index, cable schedule, etc) performed both internally and by Contractors and sub-contractors to ensure that work is being executed in accordance with Company specifications, company standards, and regulatory requirements.

About You
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related field with significant automation, instrumentation, controls, and electrical experience
  • Strong knowledge of discipline design standards, specifications, codes, and appropriate safety criteria (ISA, NEC, IEEE Standards, etc.)
  • Strong analytic and communication skills
  • Management of third-party engineering firms
  • Vendor technical qualification support activities
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and rectify instrumentation, medium/low voltage electrical equipment and control systems related issues.
  • Demonstrated work experience in Upstream Oil & Gas Production support
  • Significant experience in providing process improvements through automation applications and hardware (PLC's, HMI's, SCADA, DCS, etc)

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/ Experience
  • Leadership roles in operational or technical organizations with focus on Automation, Instrumentation and Control design, projects, or reliability
  • Programmable Logic Controller debugging and programming leveraging advanced features.
  • Networking/field communications: DNP3, Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU/RS-485/RS-232. MQTT, Radio and fiber optic communications, managed network switches, etc
  • Instrumentation and Electrical facility design, and best practices development.
  • Familiar with analytics and visualization software applications such as Ignition, SEEQ and Power BI, including development of dashboards for operations troubleshooting and support
