What is an external wholesaler?

An External Wholesaler is a financial services professional who represents investment products, such as mutual funds or insurance products, to financial advisors and institutions outside their own company. They travel within a specific region, building relationships with financial advisors, providing product information, training, and sales support to help increase product distribution. External Wholesalers work closely with Internal Wholesalers and other sales teams to achieve sales goals and ensure advisors have the resources they need. Their role is critical in driving sales, expanding market reach, and supporting advisors in serving their clients.

What is the difference between External Wholesaler vs Internal Wholesaler?

External Wholesalers primarily engage with clients outside the company, focusing on field sales and relationship building. Internal Wholesalers work within the company, supporting sales teams and managing client accounts from the office. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in work environment and client interaction style.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an external wholesaler, and why are they important?

To thrive as an External Wholesaler, you need a solid understanding of financial products, sales strategies, and market trends, typically supported by a bachelor's degree and FINRA licenses (such as Series 6 or 7 and 63). Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, financial planning software, and presentation tools is essential for managing client portfolios and sales pipelines. Exceptional interpersonal skills, persuasive communication, and the ability to build and maintain strong client relationships set top performers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for driving sales growth, meeting targets, and fostering long-term partnerships in a competitive financial marketplace.

How does an external wholesaler typically collaborate with internal teams and financial advisors to achieve sales goals?

External Wholesalers frequently work in close partnership with Internal Wholesalers and other team members to develop and execute sales strategies for their assigned territory. They regularly communicate with financial advisors, providing product education, market updates, and tailored solutions to help advisors meet their clients' needs. Coordination with marketing, product, and compliance teams is also common to ensure all materials and presentations are accurate and up-to-date. Building strong relationships and maintaining effective communication with both internal colleagues and external partners are essential for success in this role.
