Job Overview
The External Communications Coordinator supports Macy's, Inc.'s External Communications team, focusing primarily on Corporate Communications and Financial Communications while gaining exposure to broader Brand PR initiatives. Reporting to the Corporate Communications team, the External Communications Coordinator works closely with senior communications leaders to execute external storytelling, media engagement, and reporting that support Macy's business priorities, leadership visibility, and financial narrative.
What You Will Do
Corporate & Financial Communications Support
  • Support the development and execution of external communications strategies for corporate initiatives, leadership announcements, business updates, and financial milestones.
  • Draft, edit, and coordinate external materials, including press releases, media pitches, backgrounders, corporate website copy, executive talking points, and FAQs.
  • Monitor and track media coverage for corporate and financial announcements-including earnings, investor-related news, and company updates-and co-lead the development and daily distribution of the enterprise media report, delivering timely and accurate coverage summaries and insights to senior leaders across Macy's, Inc.
  • Coordinate executive media opportunities by supporting interview preparation, developing briefing materials, building media lists, and managing logistics.
  • Develop post-announcement and campaign recaps by synthesizing results, coverage performance, and key takeaways to inform future strategy.

Agency & Vendor Coordination
  • Coordinate day-to-day work with external PR agencies and vendor partners by developing briefs, tracking deliverables, and managing deadlines.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date media lists across corporate and financial verticals.

Team Operations & Planning
  • Manage the team calendar, key milestones, and leadership meetings, and maintain planning documents, editorial calendars, reporting trackers, and shared resources to support smooth execution.
  • Support budget tracking and team operations, including purchase order creation, invoice processing, and vendor management.

Cross-Functional & Brand PR Support
  • Support broader Brand PR initiatives-including campaigns, collaborations, product launches, events, and cross-functional communications-while assisting with administrative responsibilities such as budget tracking, internal updates, and daily media clips reporting.
  • Provide on-site support for key enterprise events, including the Macy's Flower Show, Macy's 4th of July Fireworks, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Black Friday, and holiday initiatives; this may require availability on weekends and national holidays.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned. Able to travel to the Herlad Square offices as needed.

Skills You Will Need
Writing & Editing Excellence: Ability to draft, edit, and proofread clear, compelling communications (press releases, media pitches, backgrounders, talking points, FAQs, and recaps) and tailor tone and messaging for varied audiences.
Media Relations Fundamentals: Foundational understanding of media relations, news cycles, and reporter needs, with the ability to support media list development, monitoring, and interview prep.
Organization & Attention to Detail: Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to stay on top of deadlines and shifting priorities. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accurate trackers, calendars, and documentation.
Initiative & Growth Mindset: Proactive and eager to learn-willing to raise your hand, take on new challenges, seek opportunities to contribute beyond assigned tasks, and ask questions to learn through experience.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Ability to partner with senior leaders, cross-functional teams, and external agencies/vendors to keep workstreams aligned and communications on track.
Reporting & Results Synthesis: Ability to translate media coverage and campaign performance into clear summaries, insights, and recommendations for internal stakeholders.
Who You Are
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 1-3 years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field (internships included).
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
