What are expressions in the context of programming and mathematics?

Expressions are combinations of values, variables, operators, and functions that, when evaluated, produce another value. In programming, expressions are used to perform calculations, assign values, and make decisions within code. In mathematics, an expression is a phrase that represents a single value, such as '2 + 3' or 'x - y'. Understanding expressions is fundamental, as they form the building blocks of more complex statements and algorithms in both fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an expressions specialist?

To succeed as an Expressions Specialist (such as a facial expressions coach or specialist in nonverbal communication), you need a solid understanding of human psychology, anatomy, and expressive behavior, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications in psychology, performing arts, or communication. Familiarity with video analysis tools, presentation software, and assessment systems is commonly required. Exceptional observational skills, emotional intelligence, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities enable accurate interpretation and coaching of expressive behavior, fostering improved communication and confidence in clients.

How does an expressions engineer typically collaborate with design and animation teams in a production setting?

As an Expressions Engineer, you will frequently work alongside designers and animators to implement complex motion graphics and interactive elements, often within software like Adobe After Effects. Collaboration involves interpreting creative briefs, discussing technical feasibility, and ensuring that expressions (custom scripts or code snippets) achieve the desired visual effects. Regular communication is essential to troubleshoot issues, refine animations, and iterate on feedback, making teamwork and adaptability key components of the workflow.

Job description

Greenwich Public Schools seeks an "Expressions" Lead Specialist to serve as an early childhood specialist to design, implement, and oversee the daily operations of a dynamic, high-energy, play-based extended-day program designed specifically for PreK students. Moving away from rigid academic structures, this program will focus on gross motor development, spatial awareness, collaborative play, and creative storytelling, and will act as a bridge between the formal school day and a supportive, active recreational environment. Ensuring high-quality developmental transitions, robust behavioral management, and a rich, active environment aligned with early childhood best practices, the "Expressions" Lead Specialist will work daily between 1:00-2:00 p.m., and will be compensated for an additional hour per week for planning. Work will be compensated at the rate of $29/hr. based on hours worked outside of the contracted day.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and facilitate daily movement, play, and creative arts curricula tailored to PreK developmental milestones.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and high-energy classroom culture utilizing positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS)
  • Collaborate with the PreK team and administration to align scheduling.
  • Suggested Activity Examples:
    • Storybook Yoga & Creative Movement: Turning favorite read-aloud books into physical movement. Students use their bodies to act out characters, animals, and weather elements, building core strength and narrative comprehension.
    • Rhythm Labs: Utilizing open-ended materials (e.g., cardboard blocks, fabric, PVC pipes) paired with rhythm instruments to encourage collaborative building, spatial reasoning, and auditory-movement synchronization.
    • Sensory Obstacle Courses: Designing interactive indoor/outdoor courses using balance beams, stepping stones, and tunnels that challenge gross motor skills while burning off end-of-day energy.
    • Giant Cooperative Canvas: Whole-body art experiences (e.g., foot-painting on massive butcher paper, shaving cream geometry) that blend sensory exploration with cooperative peer interaction.

Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to Hamilton Avenue Elementary School staff, then to other Greenwich Public Schools staff

Note:  The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.
The Greenwich Public School District is committed to a policy of equal opportunity/affirmative action for all qualified persons. The District does not discriminate in any employment practice, education program, or educational activity on the basis of race, color, religious creed, sex, age, national origin, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, genetic information, or any other basis prohibited by Connecticut state and/or federal nondiscrimination laws.
