To thrive as an Exercise Psychologist, you need a solid background in psychology, exercise science, and behavior change, typically supported by at least a master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with assessment tools, data analysis software, and certifications from organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) are commonly required. Strong interpersonal skills, motivational interviewing, and the ability to build rapport are essential soft skills for encouraging client adherence and progress. These competencies are crucial for effectively promoting mental well-being and positive lifestyle changes through exercise interventions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in exercise psychology, and how can they be addressed?

Exercise psychologists often encounter challenges such as client motivation, adherence to exercise programs, and addressing mental barriers to physical activity. Building strong rapport, using evidence-based behavioral strategies, and collaborating closely with trainers and healthcare professionals can help overcome these hurdles. Regular professional development and supervision are also valuable for staying updated on best practices and managing complex cases effectively.

As a mid-size university, there are opportunities for collaboration and to engage in transdisciplinary initiatives throughout the campus, such as with our sport and exercise psychology colleagues in the department of Kinesiology. Louisiana Tech promotes an inclusive environment and is one of only 45 institutions named to the Aspire Institutional Change (iChange) network, which works to broaden participation for STEM faculty from underrepresented groups. The university is large enough to provide a stimulating environment and small enough that one person can make a big difference.
Louisiana Tech offers excellent benefits for faculty, including a fixed-benefit retirement plan and alternative retirement investment programs. Faculty members and their families receive a tuition discount at Louisiana Tech and other universities in our system, and they are also eligible to apply for reciprocal scholarships through the Tuition Exchange program. We value diversity and seek to foster it through a commitment to recruit, retain, and develop those from historically under-represented groups in academia. Our inclusive efforts are grounded in three core values around people, knowledge, and culture. Achieving inclusion excellence takes alignment of curricular offerings, resources, and programming that prepare our students and faculty to compete in a diverse global society. About Ruston
