Job Description
Our client, a financially strong and highly respected financial services organization, is seeking a Director of Technology to lead strategy, delivery, and modernization for its enterprise Core Banking technology organization.
This leader will oversee a highly skilled team responsible for maintaining and evolving mission-critical banking systems while helping prepare the organization for continued growth through acquisitions and modernization initiatives.
Success in this role requires balancing production stability, organizational leadership, technology modernization, regulatory compliance, and strategic planning while maintaining the reliability expected of a high-volume financial platform.
This is a hands-on technology leadership role for someone who still enjoys engaging in architecture discussions, evaluating technical solutions, mentoring engineers, and influencing engineering strategy—not someone who has become disconnected from the underlying technology.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute the long-term technology strategy and roadmap for enterprise Core Banking platforms
  • Lead modernization initiatives that evolve legacy mainframe capabilities toward modern distributed architectures
  • Balance production stability with strategic transformation initiatives
  • Lead technology integration efforts associated with acquisitions and core conversions
  • Manage and mentor a hybrid team of domestic engineers, architects, analysts, and offshore development resources
  • Partner closely with executive leadership, business stakeholders, Enterprise Architecture, Product Management, Risk, Compliance, and Audit
  • Oversee vendor relationships and third-party technology partners
  • Guide architecture decisions involving IBM Mainframe, APIs, cloud integration, and enterprise modernization
  • Improve engineering processes, governance, accountability, and operational excellence
  • Ensure disaster recovery, business continuity, security, regulatory compliance, and production readiness
  • Develop future technical leaders through mentoring, coaching, and cross-training
  • Build a culture focused on continuous improvement, collaboration, innovation, and engineering excellence
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
  • 10+ years of progressive technology experience
  • 7+ years of technology leadership experience
  • Strong IBM Mainframe background
  • Previous hands-on COBOL development experience
  • Experience leading enterprise application development teams
  • Experience managing both domestic and offshore technical teams
  • Experience supporting highly available, mission-critical production systems
  • Strong organizational leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience balancing operational support with modernization initiatives
Preferred
Experience with:
  • Core Banking platforms
  • Banking acquisitions or core conversions
  • Mainframe modernization initiatives
  • API integration
  • Distributed systems
  • Cloud platforms
  • DevOps
  • CI/CD
  • Data architecture
  • Banking or other highly regulated industries
  • Disaster recovery and business continuity planning
What Will Make You Successful
We're looking for a technology leader who combines technical credibility with exceptional people leadership.
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
  • Deep understanding of IBM Mainframe environments and COBOL development
  • Experience leading complex enterprise technology organizations
  • Ability to modernize legacy platforms without compromising operational stability
  • Experience supporting acquisitions, mergers, or major system conversions
  • Strong executive communication skills
  • Proven success building high-performing technical teams
  • Ability to mentor experienced engineers while developing future technical leaders
  • Strong organizational discipline with the ability to manage multiple strategic priorities simultaneously
  • Passion for continuous improvement and engineering excellence

  • Competitive salary of $185,000–$195,000
  • 10% annual incentive bonus
  • Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid Time Off
