Executive Quantitative Modeling information

What is executive quantitative modeling?

Executive quantitative modeling is a high-level role that involves developing, overseeing, and interpreting complex mathematical and statistical models to inform business strategies and decision-making. Professionals in this position typically lead teams that create models for risk assessment, financial forecasting, portfolio management, or pricing strategies. They work closely with senior executives to translate quantitative insights into actionable business plans. This role requires deep expertise in mathematical modeling, data analysis, and proficiency with advanced analytics tools and programming languages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive in quantitative modeling?

To excel as an Executive in Quantitative Modeling, you need advanced expertise in mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and financial theory, typically supported by a graduate degree in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, statistics, finance, or engineering. Proficiency with programming languages (like Python, R, or MATLAB), data analytics platforms, and experience with industry-standard risk management or financial modeling systems is highly valued. Leadership, strategic thinking, and strong communication skills set outstanding executives apart by enabling them to guide teams and translate complex models into actionable business insights. These capabilities are crucial for driving data-driven decision-making and maintaining a competitive edge in complex financial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in executive quantitative modeling roles and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in Executive Quantitative Modeling roles often face the challenge of translating complex quantitative models into actionable insights for stakeholders who may not have technical backgrounds. Balancing model sophistication with interpretability is key, as is ensuring data quality and regulatory compliance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as IT, risk, and business units, is essential to integrate models into business processes and to gain buy-in from decision-makers. Regular communication, thorough documentation, and ongoing validation of model performance help address these challenges effectively.

Job description

Overview

Instacart's Strategic Finance team partners closely with leaders across the business to drive clarity, rigor, and results. Within this group, the Retailer Pod supports our retailer partnerships by shaping deal strategy, building robust financial models, and guiding decisions that help Instacart and our partners grow together.

We are seeking a Senior Financial Analyst to accelerate retailer deal flow and portfolio performance. You will join a high-impact, collaborative pod within Strategic Finance, working daily with Retail Partnerships, Deal Desk, Legal, Revenue Operations, Data Science, and Accounting. In this role, you'll own end-to-end financial analysis for complex commercial deals, build scalable forecasting frameworks, and present actionable insights that influence decisions at the highest levels.

This is an opportunity to roll up your sleeves in a fast-paced, evolving environment, bring structure to ambiguity, and make a visible impact on Instacart's growth. You'll help us go far together by pairing analytical depth with crisp storytelling that moves the business forward.

About the Job
  • Own end-to-end financial modeling for retailer partnerships, including pricing strategies, incentive structures, unit economics, and ROI analyses with scenario and sensitivity testing.
  • Partner with Retail Partnerships and Deal Desk to translate strategy into clear financial outcomes; support negotiations with data-driven recommendations and crisp trade-off frameworks.
  • Build and maintain driver-based forecasts for a portfolio of retailer deals; establish KPIs, track performance vs. plan, and surface insights that improve margin and payback.
  • Design and standardize scalable templates, playbooks, and dashboards that streamline diligence, approval, and post-close performance management.
  • Create executive-ready materials-models, memos, and presentations-that distill complex analyses into clear narratives and decisions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Data Science, Accounting, Revenue Operations, and Legal to ensure operational feasibility, policy alignment, and accurate financial treatment.

About YouMinimum Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience in Strategic Finance, FP&A, Investment Banking, Private Equity, or Management Consulting supporting commercial deals or growth initiatives in technology, e-commerce, marketplace, logistics, or retail.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business, a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Advanced financial modeling skills in Excel/Google Sheets, including driver-based models, cohort and retention analysis, and scenario/sensitivity analysis.
  • Proficiency in SQL for self-serve analysis and experience with a BI tool (e.g., Looker or Tableau).
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating or structuring commercial partnerships or contracts (pricing, unit economics, and ROI modeling) and presenting recommendations to senior stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with marketplace or retailer/CPG partnerships and multi-sided platform economics.
  • Hands-on collaboration with Sales/Partnerships and Legal on deal terms (e.g., volume commitments, incentives, performance SLAs).
  • Familiarity with revenue recognition concepts (e.g., ASC 606) and how contract structures impact financial treatment.
  • Experience building dashboards in Looker/Tableau and automating workflows with SQL or Python.
  • MBA, CFA, or CPA.
