Job description

The City of Topeka is seeking an experienced Chief Network Engineer to manage the Citys enterprise IT network system. This leadership role is critical in ensuring the reliability, performance and security of multiple systems that support the Citys operations across the organization.

Key responsibilities include providing Tier-3 technical support, leading infrastructure incident response, participating in strategic technology planning and budgeting, and acting with delegated departmental authority in the absence of executive IT leadership as directed. Additionally, this position is required to respond to IT support calls after business hours, including weekends and holidays.

What youll do:

  • Lead the engineering, administration, monitoring, maintenance and provisioning activities of the Citys enterprise network infrastructure.
  • Administer and maintain enterprise Microsoft technologies, including Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint, and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Manage and support enterprise networking technologies, including but not limited to ISP switches and routers, external and internal firewalls, VPN systems, and advanced authentication systems.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and performance management for subordinate staff.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Advanced knowledge of enterprise networking and systems engineering.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or equivalent technology field.
  • With a Bachelors degree, must have a minimum of seven years of experience performing network engineering, administration, monitoring, maintenance and provisioning activities related to enterprise level, including experience in at least two activities listed below:
    • Microsoft Active Directory Domain and Microsoft Exchange infrastructure environment and supporting 1200 nodes.
    • Internet and Intranet switching and routing infrastructure environment and supporting 3500 network nodes.
    • physical and virtual server infrastructure, an enterprise level storage area network (SAN), and an enterprise data back-up infrastructure supporting 100 server nodes.
    • IT security infrastructure.
  • Without a degree, a high school diploma or its equivalent is required with a minimum of eleven years of experience as defined above.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience providing technical support to end users of information technology-based systems is required.
  • MSCE, CCNA, or equivalent certifications are preferred.
  • Must pass an extensive background check, including a Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check and KBI fingerprinting.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas drivers license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topekas insurance carrier.

Annual Entry Salary: $118,000 - $125,000, depending on qualifications
