Overview

A large acute care hospital in central Louisiana is seeking an experienced Laboratory Director to oversee all laboratory and phlebotomy operations across a high-volume hospital laboratory environment.

This executive laboratory leadership role is responsible for operational oversight, staffing strategy, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, financial performance, and multidisciplinary laboratory operations including Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Phlebotomy services.

The ideal candidate is an experienced acute care laboratory leader with strong operational management skills, large-team leadership experience, and a deep understanding of hospital laboratory compliance, quality standards, and workflow optimization.

Department Overview
  • Approximately 75 FTEs
  • Oversight of:
    • Blood Bank
    • Chemistry
    • Hematology
    • Microbiology
    • Phlebotomy
  • Reports directly to Facility COO
  • Leadership opening due to retirement transition
  • High operational visibility within hospital executive structure
Responsibilities
  • Direct all operational, administrative, and clinical laboratory service activities
  • Lead staffing strategy, departmental workflow optimization, and productivity management across laboratory and phlebotomy services
  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and regulatory laboratory standards
  • Oversee quality assurance, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership, physicians, pathology teams, and interdisciplinary departments to support efficient laboratory operations
  • Manage laboratory budgeting, supply utilization, staffing performance, and operational metrics
  • Support onboarding, mentorship, competency validation, and leadership development for laboratory staff
  • Maintain high standards for laboratory accuracy, turnaround times, and service excellence
  • Drive process improvement initiatives and operational efficiency strategies across all laboratory service lines
QualificationsRequired
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or biological/chemical/physical sciences
  • ASCP certification required
  • Active Medical Technologist state licensure
  • Recent acute care laboratory leadership experience at the Manager or Supervisor level
  • Strong operational leadership and laboratory workflow management experience
Preferred
  • Experience overseeing large laboratory teams with high FTE counts
  • Multi-department acute care laboratory leadership experience
  • Experience within high-volume hospital laboratory environments
  • Strong regulatory, compliance, and accreditation management experience
