What is an executive insurance controller?

Executive Insurance Controllers are senior financial professionals who oversee the accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance functions within an insurance company. They are responsible for managing budgets, ensuring accurate financial statements, and implementing internal controls to safeguard company assets. Additionally, they work closely with executive leadership to develop financial strategies, assess risk, and ensure the organization adheres to industry laws and regulations. Their expertise is vital for maintaining the financial health and integrity of the insurance company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive insurance controller?

To thrive as an Executive Insurance Controller, you need expertise in financial management, insurance accounting, regulatory compliance, and typically a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field, often accompanied by CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with financial reporting software, insurance management systems, and advanced Excel skills is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are key soft skills that set top performers apart. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory adherence, and strategic decision-making essential for organizational success in the insurance industry.

What are some common challenges faced by executive insurance controllers when managing cross-departmental financial reporting?

Executive Insurance Controllers often need to coordinate financial data from multiple departments, such as claims, underwriting, and compliance. One common challenge is ensuring consistency and accuracy across diverse data sources, which may use different systems or reporting standards. Building strong relationships and clear communication channels with department heads is essential to streamline data collection and resolve discrepancies quickly. Proficiency in insurance-specific accounting regulations and financial software also helps address these challenges effectively.

With offices in Roswell, Lawrenceville, Jonesboro, and Kennesaw, TE Certified continues to expand and modernize our operations — including investments in financial systems, automation, and advanced analytics. We’re looking for a Controller who is ready to grow with us, strengthen our accounting foundation, and help guide the next phase of our company’s success.

About the Role

The Controller will oversee the accounting function and play a key leadership role in ensuring accuracy, accountability, and insight across the organization. You’ll work closely with the Director of Finance, executives, and department leaders to support decision-making through timely reporting, sound controls, and data-driven analysis. This position is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth home services environment, understands COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) accounting, and enjoys building scalable financial processes. You’ll manage an accounting team responsible for AP, AR, payroll, inventory, and commissions while also supporting automation and system integrations across Sage Intacct, ServiceTitan, and CaptivateIQ.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Oversight

  • Oversee all daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, inventory, and general ledger.
  • Lead and develop accounting team members, fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and audit requirements.
  • Provide financial and operational insights that support leadership decision-making and business planning.

Accounting & Process Management

  • Manage the month-end and year-end close process, including reconciliations, journal entries, and accruals.
  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all accounting records and financial statements.
  • Oversee COGS accounting, including accurate job costing, purchase order tracking, margin reporting, and inventory controls.
  • Coordinate with external CPA firms for audits, tax filings, and compliance reviews.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline accounting workflows and strengthen data integrity.

Reporting, Analysis & Forecasting

  • Prepare and analyze company financial statements, management reports, and forecasts.
  • Assist in budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with department leaders.
  • Manage cash flow planning, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Identify risks and opportunities, monitor performance, and explain variances to support strategic decision-making.
  • Partner with leadership and other business segments to enhance reporting processes, implement BI dashboards, and automate consolidated monthly reporting with variance commentary.
  • Perform independent analysis and support new initiatives with a solutions-driven approach.

Systems & Integration

  • Oversee accounting operations across Sage Intacct, ServiceTitan, and CaptivateIQ, ensuring accuracy and synchronization between systems.
  • Support automation, API integrations, and the design of system workflows that improve efficiency and data transparency.
  • Collaborate with operations and IT teams to ensure accounting processes align with company systems and field activities.

BENEFITS:

  • Top Compensation in Atlanta – We’ve done the research.
  • Company Sponsored Insurance Provided
  • 401(k) with Company Match – Invest in your future.
  • Paid Gym Membership – You choose the gym.
  • Company-Sponsored Dental, Vision & Life Insurance
  • Paid Holidays & PTO – 6 holidays + 5 PTO days annually.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a leadership or Controller role.
  • Strong, hands-on experience with Sage Intacct required.
  • Experience in COGS accounting required; home service industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with ServiceTitan and CaptivateIQ (or similar platforms) highly preferred.
  • Advanced Excel and analytical skills; experience with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, etc.) is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, reporting, and operational performance analysis.
  • Proven ability to manage and mentor accounting teams effectively.
