Executive Development information

What is executive development?

Executive development refers to the process of preparing and enhancing the skills, knowledge, and abilities of individuals in leadership positions within an organization. This can involve formal training programs, coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job experiences designed to help executives lead more effectively. The goal is to ensure that leaders are equipped to drive organizational success, adapt to changing business environments, and manage teams efficiently. Executive development is crucial for succession planning and maintaining a competitive edge in the market.

What are some typical challenges faced in an executive development role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Executive Development often encounter challenges such as aligning leadership programs with evolving organizational goals, engaging busy executives in ongoing learning, and measuring the impact of development initiatives. To address these, it’s important to maintain strong communication with senior leaders, tailor programs to specific business needs, and use robust metrics to track outcomes. Collaborating closely with HR, business unit leaders, and external partners can also help ensure initiatives remain relevant and effective.

While both roles aim to enhance workforce capabilities, their target audiences and work environments differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in executive development, and why are they important?

To excel in Executive Development, you need a strong background in leadership theory, talent management, and organizational behavior, often supported by a degree in business or human resources. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), assessment tools, and certifications such as SHRM or HRCI is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and relationship-building skills help drive effective leadership programs and foster executive growth. These capabilities are crucial for shaping future leaders, aligning talent strategies with business goals, and ensuring long-term organizational success.

Job description

Overview

At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canada’s most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

We are seeking an experienced and highly trusted professional to support the Prairies Region Managing Partner. This individual will provide comprehensive administrative support while operating as a strategic associate and will play an integral part in enhancing leadership effectiveness—optimizing time, streamlining communications, and coordinating key priorities across the region. You will contribute to the successful execution of strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment, momentum, and operational excellence.

Leveraging sound judgment, strong organizational awareness, and the ability to anticipate needs, you will act as a key enabler of leadership impact. This role requires a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and precision, with accountability for delivering projects efficiently and maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

What you will do
  • Provide high-impact, strategic administrative support to the Managing Partner, including proactive ownership of complex calendars, executive-level meeting coordination, and travel planning with a focus on maximizing leadership effectiveness.
  • Act as a key enabler of strategic priorities by ensuring continuity across initiatives—tracking decisions, monitoring timelines, and driving follow-through on deliverables, while supporting the preparation of leadership materials and high-stakes meetings.
  • Serve as a trusted liaison and relationship connector, building and maintaining strong networks with internal senior leaders and external stakeholders, including C-suite contacts, to support regional priorities and business development efforts.
  • Contribute to the advancement of strategic relationships by supporting leadership in identifying opportunities to strengthen market presence, client engagement, and growth across the Prairies region.
  • Support leadership participation in key governance forums, committees, and priority initiatives, demonstrating strong judgment, discretion, and organizational awareness.
  • Coordinate and support the Managing Partner’s co-chair responsibilities for fundraising campaigns, ensuring seamless planning, stakeholder engagement, and execution.
  • Leverage emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to enhance productivity, streamline processes, and introduce innovative approaches to administrative and operational work.
  • Draft, refine, and distribute high-quality communications that are aligned, clear, and reflective of leadership voice and messaging.

At times, business needs arise and employees are required and agree to work beyond their normal work day or work week to fulfill the accountabilities required for their job. Likewise, people need time to devote to personal matters, and our approach to flexibility provides for this.

What you bring to the role
  • 5+ years of executive-level administrative experience, with demonstrated success supporting senior leaders in complex, fast-paced environments.
  • A strong orientation toward innovation and continuous improvement, with a genuine interest in leveraging AI and new technologies to enhance ways of working.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain trusted relationships, with the confidence and credibility to engage effectively with senior leaders and external stakeholders.
  • Experience contributing to business development or relationship-building activities, with an understanding of how to support leadership in generating and nurturing strategic opportunities.
  • Strong project coordination and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, anticipate needs, and deliver against tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to produce polished, executive-ready materials.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and a high level of digital fluency.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
