Position Summary:

Airbus U.S. is looking for a proven leader of satellite systems engineering development with excellent experience in embedded flight software and its avionics integration. This role is a senior leadership role on the ARROW450 platform, being responsible for the software and functional avionics Integrated Program Team (IPT). Candidates will bring exceptional engineering skills as well as strong and transverse leadership experience in both the development and flight operation of avionics in aerospace programs. The individual will be responsible for leading a multi domain team across our organization in delivery of program goals.


Position Responsibilities:

The position will be to lead avionics and embedded flight software development and integration of satellite programs. It will also involve daily briefings to customers and executive leadership. In terms of program chronology, this individual will drive program execution through the full project lifecycle, from requirement development, architecture development and trades, specification development, requirements verification, compliance assessment, and operations. Leadership of design reviews, engineering review boards, technical planning, system integration, and risk and opportunity management will be primary responsibilities.

The successful candidate will also have responsibility for technical growth of Airbus U.S., providing their expertise to mentor junior staff members, develop processes and procedures, and build engineering rigor into the culture of the company. Being at the cutting edge of space technology, we need someone who is eager to learn, grow, and take on new and potentially unfamiliar challenges. Team management will be fundamental, although Airbus US operates a matrix structure where functional management supports IPT management.

This IPT Fellow will be an industry expert in many aspects of aerospace product development, delivery, and/or operations, and will provide strong technical leadership and project / team management support for complex assignments, under the leadership of the VP of Space Program Management. The IPT Fellow will have programming and subject matter responsibility and authority.

Program Engineering 75%

  • Execute Engineering responsibilities for Airbus U.S. satellite programs:
    • Functional Avionics - requirements and use case definitions, hardware / software integration
    • Requirements development - initial definition, decomposition and flowdown, management
    • System design and trade studies - high level concept trades to support subsequent detail design
    • Program design review planning, management, presentation to customers (internal and external)
    • Verification planning and testing - verification matrices, buy-off / sell-off, test planning, etc.
    • Manage a cross-domain team and liaise with function management as needed
  • Lead Functional Avionics architecture definition and trades. Support program execution through the integration and testing of multiple hardware and software subsystems to achieve high-level objectives.

Roadmap Development 15%

  • Support the Airbus spacecraft development product roadmap: including technology insertion, schedule, and cost targets aligned for future business captures.
  • Support the definition of spacecraft customization process for customer mission needs.
  • Manage a cross-domain team and liaise with function management as needed to balance program and roadmap development needs

Additional Responsibilities 10%

  • Perform all the necessary systems engineering activities to build, to maintain and to evolve the Airbus spacecraft products.
  • Promote and optimize cost savings by reuse of the heritage platform designs and manufacturing infrastructures in the pursuit of various constellation prospects.

Qualified Experience / Skills / Training:

Education:

  • Required: Bachelors degree in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas
  • Strongly Preferred: Masters in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 25 years with a Bachelor's degree, or 20 years with a Master's degree
  • Proven track-record of working with aerospace hardware and/or software systems, starting from conceptual designs and tradeoffs thru detailed design, development, manufacture, integration, test, deployment, and operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:

  • Subject matter expert in several elements of space mission architectures extending beyond the satellite platform - including launch, flight operations, mission CONOPS, user interfaces, etc.
  • Experience with systems architecture, requirements definition and decomposition, and requirements verification and validation (System Specifications, Requirements Verification and Traceability Matrices)
  • Understanding of model-based systems engineering practices and tools
  • Experience leading and/or performing analyses for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory, certification, product assurance or other specialties engineering disciplines
  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner effectively across multiple levels.
  • Be team-minded and ready to work in a multi-functional and multi-cultural, fast-moving and complex/technical environment.
  • Flexible attitude and strong initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results.

Travel Required:

  • Periodic travel (less than 20%) to Airbus U.S. facilities or partner companies
  • Occasional International travel to collaborate with European Airbus counterparts

  • US Citizenship is required

Clearance:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government security clearance
  • Active DoD security clearance at Secret or above highly desirable

Physical Requirements:

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screen and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents.
  • Hearing: able to hear to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds including safety warnings or alarms.
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment.
  • Carrying: able to carry documents, electronic equipment and/or supplies up to 40lbs/9kg.
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, electronic equipment and/or supplies up to 40lbs/9kg.
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on computer.
  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to occasionally squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items shelved on bottom shelves.
  • Standing: able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Walking: able to walk through office and outside areas including uneven surfaces.
