Duties Summary The primary function of this position is to conduct professional examinations of individuals, partnerships, and small domestic corporate organizations with the objective of determining if proper taxation pursuant to the Hawaii Revised Statutes was adhered to.

Applicable taxes and issues include and are not limited to: General excise, use, employer's withholding (WH), transient accommodations (TA), rental motor vehicle, and resident and non-resident status income tax returns, which encompasses claims for credit for taxes paid to another state and questionable business and non-business income, exemptions, and deductions. Knowledge and Abilities Required: 1. Knowledge of: Interviewing techniques; and 2.

State and applicable Federal income and miscellaneous rules and regulations; standard methods of bookkeeping. 3. Ability to conduct interviews and deal effectively with the public; analyze facts and figures and derive sound conclusions therefrom; understand and apply tax laws, rules and interpretations; make arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately; operate adding and calculating machines; give and receive oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in one or a combination of the following which included arithmetic computations: 1. Public work experience which involved interviewing and/or investigating; or 2. Clerical experience which provided a familiarity with State and Federal tax laws and regulations; and with the methods, practices, and procedures of tax work.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one (1) year of experience in the tax field which requires the application of income and miscellaneous tax laws, related regulations, and procedures in preparing tax returns, determining liability, or collecting delinquent taxes. SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: 1. Excess Specialized Experience of the type and quality described above may be substituted for General Experience on a year-for-year basis.

2. Graduation from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the General Experience. QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position.

The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the position for which he/she is being considered.
