Department Summary

The Office of Admissions includes over 50 staff who are engaged in the work of recruitment and outreach to prospective undergraduates, and making admission decisions on all applicants for freshman, transfer, and post-baccalaureate undergraduate admission. Admissions is a unit of the Division of Student Services & Enrollment Management, and works closely with several other units of that division, especially Scholarships/Financial Aid and Orientation, as well as many other parts of campus.
Within Admissions, the recruitment & outreach team that includes this position is a dynamic, committed group of professionals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives who are often the first UO representatives that thousands of students per year from around the US and beyond will meet in the process of choosing whether to apply to, and ultimately attend, the University of Oregon. Their care for the students extends beyond the desire to have students choose Oregon, and also extends to our outreach mission, making sure that students and their families feel empowered about the college preparation, search, and choice process, regardless of where they enroll. In light of the university's growing presence around the US and beyond, we are adding to this dedicated staff in order to accomplish even more in our work.

Position Summary

As a member of the Student Services & Enrollment Management team, the Admissions Counselor is responsible for representing the University of Oregon (UO) to multiple constituencies, including prospective students, their families, and school/community contacts. The Counselor independently develops and implements recruiting initiatives to meet application and enrollment goals, and also conducts holistic review of freshman applications for their assigned territory, and others as assigned. The Counselor must be effective at independently planning recruitment strategies including high school visits, area receptions, and individual meetings. Will be expected to participate in search committees, event planning, and other project work related to student recruitment. Collaborates often with campus partners. Additionally, this position is a front-line service provider with primary responsibility for student admission counseling, recruitment travel, and management of the assigned geographic areas. The position requires a significant level of independent judgment and autonomy in regards to work planning; local representation of the university to thousands of students, families, counselors, and other key staff at secondary schools and community colleges; expert counseling of students and families; and application of university admission policy through holistic admission review. Secondary responsibilities include scholarship review and other duties as assigned. This position reports to an Assistant Director of Admissions for Recruitment.
Additional expectations of the position:
This position requires an extensive amount of travel, often including locations that are not serviced by public transportation.
This position must be able to work irregular hours and travel extensively on nights and weekends.
This position will require a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain UO Driver Certification.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree.
One year of prior experience in higher education or equivalent.

Professional Competencies

Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
Ease in using technology for communication, record keeping, and management of data.
Ability to manage a complicated daily, weekly and monthly schedule with recurring important professional commitments on and off campus.
Ability to work in a collaborative and effective manner with students, alumni, diverse families, administrators, and faculty.
Ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Ability to work with key stakeholders for the University.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in student recruitment, education advocacy, or college counseling.
Proficiency and fluency (grammar, spelling, syntax, structure) in both written and spoken Spanish.
Experience within an institution of higher education.
Knowledge of university-specific computer application programs and knowledge of university procedures.
