What is an event designer?

Event designers are professionals who specialize in creating the visual and thematic elements of events, such as weddings, corporate gatherings, conferences, and parties. They work closely with clients to develop a cohesive look and feel, including decor, lighting, color schemes, floral arrangements, and layout. Their goal is to transform venues and spaces to reflect the desired atmosphere and ensure a memorable experience for attendees. Event designers often collaborate with vendors, planners, and production teams to bring their creative vision to life.

What does an event designer do?

The job duties of an event designer involve overseeing the planning, design, and decoration for an event. Your responsibilities vary depending on the client or employer. As an event designer, you work within a venue to plan the decor and layout of the event space. You may direct workers as they set up and oversee breakdown after the event. You may work on corporate events, conferences, and trade shows, or you may manage decoration for weddings, parties, or private events. You can operate as a freelancer, work for an event planning company or venue, or plan events for a single corporation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an event designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Event Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, spatial planning, and event logistics, often supported by a degree in design, hospitality, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and event management platforms is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills set top professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure that events are visually impressive, seamlessly executed, and tailored to client needs, resulting in memorable and successful experiences.

How does an event designer typically collaborate with clients and vendors throughout the event planning process?

Event Designers work closely with clients to understand their vision, preferences, and goals for an event. They often facilitate regular meetings or presentations to share design concepts, mood boards, and mock-ups, ensuring client feedback is incorporated at every stage. Additionally, Event Designers coordinate with vendors such as florists, lighting specialists, and furniture rental companies to bring the design to life, ensuring seamless communication and execution. This collaborative approach helps maintain consistency and quality while addressing any challenges that arise during the planning process.

What is the difference between Event Designer vs Event Coordinator?

AspectEvent DesignerEvent Coordinator
Primary FocusCreative concept, theme, and aesthetic design of eventsLogistics, planning, and execution of event details
Skills & CertificationsDesign skills, creativity, project management, certifications in event design or planningOrganizational skills, communication, vendor management, certifications in event planning
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, client meetings, on-site event setupOn-site event locations, vendor coordination, client communication
Industry UsageUsed in event planning, wedding, and corporate event industriesUsed across all event types for execution and coordination

While both roles are essential in event planning, an Event Designer primarily focuses on the creative and aesthetic aspects of an event, developing themes and visual concepts. An Event Coordinator handles the logistical details, ensuring the event runs smoothly. Understanding these differences helps clients and employers find the right professional for their event needs.

How to become an event designer without a degree?

Event designers can enter the field through self-education, gaining skills in design, organization, and project management, often using online courses or tutorials. Building a strong portfolio and gaining practical experience through internships or freelance work can also help establish credibility without a formal degree.

Job description

MX is on a mission to Empower the World to be Financially Strong, and events are one of the most powerful ways we bring that mission to life for prospective clients. As Event Marketing Manager, you will own the end-to-end execution of MX's regional event program - roadshows, roundtables, executive dinners, and regional trade shows - working with demand generation leadership on strategy and priorities, with every event designed to generate sales qualified leads (SQLs) and qualified pipeline in key markets.

You will also support the Director of Event Marketing on tier-one industry events and partner event activations - owning the dinners, receptions, and ancillary activities attached to them - and support partner marketing initiatives such as co-hosted events and joint campaigns with MX's partner ecosystem. You will build and maintain the tracking and reporting that proves event ROI, and work hand-in-hand with our BDR team before, during, and after every event to convert engagement into SQLs, meetings, and pipeline.

Success in this role means every event has a clear pipeline goal, a coordinated BDR play, and a measurable return - and MX's presence in regional markets grows stronger with every activation.

What You'll Do:Regional Event Strategy & Execution
  • Own end-to-end planning and execution of regional events - roadshows, roundtables, executive dinners, and regional trade shows - from venue and vendor selection through on-site delivery

  • Partner with sales leadership to select regions, target accounts, and personas so every event maps to pipeline opportunity

  • Manage event budgets, vendors, and logistics to maximize ROI and cost efficiency

Industry & Partner Event Support
  • Support the Director of Event Marketing on tier-one industry conferences and trade shows, helping to own and define workstreams such as pre-event campaigns, meeting programs, and on-site logistics

  • Own dinners, receptions, and ancillary activities attached to industry events - from concept and guest targeting through on-site execution and follow-up - to deepen engagement with key accounts

  • Support partner event activations and co-marketing initiatives - co-hosted events, sponsorships, and joint campaigns with MX partners

Event Tracking, Measurement & ROI
  • Build and maintain MX's event tracking and attribution framework - lead capture, campaign structure in Marketo and Salesforce, and post-event reporting

  • Report on event performance against SQL, pipeline, and ROI targets, including cost-per-SQL and pipeline-per-event, using tools like HockeyStack and Domo

  • Use performance data to recommend which events to scale, adjust, or cut

BDR & Sales Alignment
  • Run coordinated pre-event outreach plays with the BDR team to drive registrations and booked meetings

  • Orchestrate on-site meeting programs and post-event follow-up sprints so event engagement converts to SQLs and pipeline

  • Adhere to lead capture, scoring, and routing standards so every event lead reaches sales quickly and cleanly

What We're Looking For:
  • 3+ years of experience in event marketing, field marketing, or demand generation for B2B companies

  • Proven track record of running regional events that generated measurable SQLs and pipeline

  • Hands-on experience with Marketo, Salesforce, and event management platforms (e.g., Splash); familiarity with attribution tools like HockeyStack a plus

  • Strong analytical instincts - you measure everything and can defend event spend with pipeline data

  • Experience partnering directly with BDR/SDR teams on pre- and post-event conversion plays

  • Exceptional project management and vendor management skills; comfortable running multiple events in parallel

  • Experience marketing to financial institutions or in fintech strongly preferred

  • Willingness to travel for regional, industry, and partner events (~25-40%)
