Job description

The Greenwich Country Day School seeks to hire a Cook to start in August 2026. Make Family Meals Every Day! Hours are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Range $24-26 an hour.

GCDS Dining Halls are self-operated. We proudly prepare and serve restaurant-quality food, with a focus on sustainability across all aspects of our food service operations. We have both a container farm and an actual farm. The GCDS Dining Hall team takes great pride in serving fantastic meals to hundreds of students, faculty, and staff daily. We serve a variety of cuisines, including Oaxacan, Sicilian, East African, Vietnamese, and Indian, just to name a few. Our goal is not just to serve great school food, but to serve some of the best-quality food in Connecticut!
This is a full-time, 10-month/year position. All kitchen and dining room personnel must be available to work evening and/or weekend special events, as scheduled. Diversity is a core value at GCDS, and we seek candidates who demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Prepare cooking ingredients by washing, cutting, chopping vegetables, cutting meat, and other meal prep.
  • Serves meals by reviewing recipes; assembling, combining, and cooking ingredients
  • Follow all safety protocols with regard to proper sanitizing and food allergies
  • Producing items for the hot entree of the day, as well as preparation for events
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor(s)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Perform other kitchen duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in hotels, restaurants, and/or catering
  • Ability to lift 25-50+ pounds and stand for long stretches of time
  • Proficient in food preparation, cooking techniques, and portion control
  • Previous experience in a school or institutional culinary setting is preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team, maintain a clean workstation, and manage time efficiently
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to follow recipes and dietary guidelines
  • Willingness to offer and accept constructive criticism for the overall improvement of the team
  • Ability to understand both written and verbal instructions in English
  • Ability to work well under pressure and with the time constraints of a busy commercial kitchen
