What is an Evening Relocation Nanny?

An Evening Relocation Nanny is a childcare professional who provides support to families during the evening hours, often when they are moving or transitioning to a new home or location. Their responsibilities may include supervising children, helping them adjust to new routines, preparing meals, and offering emotional support during the relocation process. These nannies are skilled at creating a stable, comforting environment for children amidst change. They may also assist with packing, organizing, and ensuring children’s belongings are cared for during the move. Families often hire relocation nannies to help minimize stress and maintain consistency for their children during periods of transition.

What are some common challenges faced by evening relocation nannies, and how can they be managed?

Evening relocation nannies often face the challenge of helping children adjust to a new home and routine, which can involve managing bedtime routines in an unfamiliar environment and supporting emotional transitions. Building trust quickly with both the children and parents is essential, as is maintaining consistency in care despite changing surroundings. Open communication with the family and flexibility in adapting to new settings are key strategies for managing these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Evening Relocation Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Evening Relocation Nanny, you typically need experience in childcare, a background in early childhood education or a related field, and certifications such as CPR and First Aid. Familiarity with scheduling apps, communication tools, and sometimes knowledge of travel or relocation logistics is important. Strong organizational skills, cultural sensitivity, flexibility, and excellent communication help nannies build trust with families and adapt to new environments. These skills ensure the child’s safety, well-being, and smooth transitions during evening hours and relocation periods.

Job description

Overview
BAY AREA (LOCAL CANDIDATES ONLY) - A warm, thoughtful, and dynamic family relocating from San Carlos to Portola Valley seeks an exceptional FULL-TIME FAMILY ASSISTANT to become a valued long-term partner in their home and help care for their three children-7 year-old twins and 4-year-old. Their ideal start date is mid-June to support the family's summer move, though they are happy to wait until after the Fourth of July for the right fit. This is a wonderful opportunity for a highly proactive, emotionally intelligent professional who naturally steps in where needed and thrives in a role blending household support with meaningful, hands-on childcare. The family is specifically hoping to find a true "Mentor/Guide" presence. Someone who can help raise kind, confident, socially aware children through calm leadership, boundaries, and genuine connection.
The role will begin with a summer focused on helping the family settle into a new home and establish smooth routines. Responsibilities will include transporting the children to and from summer camps, some of which require commuting between Portola Valley and San Carlos for drop-offs and pick-ups. While the family unpacks and organizes after their move, the Family Assistant will help supervise the children, organize their spaces, and create practical systems throughout the home, particularly in the kitchen and children's areas. Their location offers ample outdoor space for nature exploration, and the family would love someone who enjoys the outdoors, hiking, swimming, and creating imaginative, screen-free adventures.
As summer transitions into the school year, the role will evolve into a balanced Family Assistant position with three core pillars: household management, culinary support, and after-school childcare. The family would love someone who takes ownership of meal planning, grocery sourcing and ordering, pantry management, preparing school lunches, and creating organic, clean-label, high-protein snacks and family dinners. This person will also support the children's school routines, including drop-offs and pick-ups, homework support, and helping afternoons feel structured, calm, and engaging. Household management duties will include running errands, vetting additional household staff, coordinating contractors for ongoing home projects, and serving as an extra set of capable hands whenever parents' work schedules become demanding. A family vehicle will be provided while on the job.
The family guarantees 40 hours per week, with a schedule that flexes during the summer around camp needs. Once school begins, the anticipated schedule will generally include midday-to-evening shifts on Mondays and Fridays from 12-6pm, full-day coverage on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30am-6pm, and a midday start on Wednesdays from 11am-6pm. The family is also open to adjusting hours for a candidate who would enjoy occasional weekend support, date nights, or added flexibility, though this is not a requirement. Compensation is competitive, and includes guaranteed hours, paid sick time, paid holidays, and the potential for healthcare benefits. Pay if flexible for the right candidate, starting at $45-60/hour gross via payroll. They have a large, friendly dog and cat, though pet care is not a requirement (though they would love someone open to taking a pet to the vet on occasion!).
This position is best suited for a polished, warm, and deeply capable professional who is fully engaged while on duty and naturally able to bring calm to a busy household. The ideal candidate understands the developmental needs of school-aged children, can navigate friendship dynamics and sibling moments with empathy, and sees everyday interactions as opportunities to teach life skills, confidence, and kindness. Must be comfortable packing daily lunches, resetting the kitchen, organizing sports gear, leading a nature walk, or helping a child process a hard day at school. Above all, the family hopes to welcome someone who will feel like a trusted and treasured extension of their team for years to come.
