Job description

Description:

Ferguson Electric’s Electrical Engineer II is a mid-level position for engineers focusing on becoming self-sufficient on design and engineering tasks. This position will contribute to the electrical system design, engineering, commissioning and construction efforts for commercial and industrial projects, including healthcare, education, research, commercial facilities, and utilities. This role involves supporting project design teams, developing innovative electrical solutions, and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. The Electrical Engineer II role will provide guidance to junior staff as needed, assist in managing project deliverables, and support the company’s commitment to quality, safety, and client satisfaction while upholding Ferguson Electric’s core values.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Electrical Systems Design:
    • Design of electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, and communication systems, for commercial and industrial projects.
    • Support the development of project design goals, specifications, and strategies to meet client requirements and project objectives.
    • Participate in quality control reviews of engineering documents to learn about accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
    • Help ensure designs comply with applicable codes (e.g., NFPA, IEEE) and industry standards.
  • Electrical Systems Analysis and Field Support:
    • Help specify electrical equipment, components, and materials, ensuring compatibility with project needs and budgets under supervision.
    • Perform engineering studies, such as load analysis, short-circuit, and coordination and arc flash, using tools like SKM or Easypower with minimal supervision.
    • Review of submittals, shop drawings, and other construction documents to ensure they are meeting the project requirements.
    • Develop relay, transformer, breaker and battery testing plans and reports with minimal experience.
    • Develop relay programs with minimal guidance.
    • Support service technicians with troubleshooting customer electrical system problems under the guidance of higher-level engineers.
  • Project Leadership:
    • Support the coordination of electrical engineering aspects of projects, helping adhere to budgets, schedules, and quality standards.
    • Participate in project team and client meetings to align on project scope, progress, and deliverables.
    • Assist in the preparation of construction documents, including drawings and specifications.
  • Site Engagement:
    • Participate in job site visits to observe existing conditions, monitor construction progress, and learn about compliance with design specifications.
    • Attend construction meetings and provide basic technical support to field teams and subcontractors as needed.
    • Perform physical walk-throughs of sites under supervision to assess conditions and resolve issues.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Contribute to strategies to improve design quality, coordination, and efficiency in production efforts.
    • Support the incorporation of renewable and sustainable design practices where applicable to enhance project outcomes.


Requirements:

ABOUT YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program required and preferred with electrical systems focus.
    • 4-6 years of experience in electrical engineering, with a focus on commercial or industrial projects.
    • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is required or additional 5 years of experience directly related to the job responsibilities.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for documentation and reporting.
    • Proficiency in drawing software (e.g. Revit and AutoCAD) and electrical analysis software (e.g., SKM) is preferred.
    • Good understanding of designing power distribution, lighting, and communication systems per NEC, IEEE and other relevant codes is preferred.
    • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications.
    • Basic understanding and knowledge of electrical system installation methods and standards.
    • Exposure to renewable energy systems or sustainable design practices is a plus.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work on multiple tasks.
    • Good leadership and mentorship skills to contribute to team efforts.
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with clients, contractors, and internal teams.
    • Organizational and time management skills to handle tasks and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to adapt to an adjusted work schedule, including occasional overtime or evening/weekend hours, to meet project demands.
    • Willingness to accept constructive feedback and make changes as necessary to improve job performance.
    • Willingness to learn and develop skills in various engineering tasks, software, and equipment.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Ability to conduct physical site walk-throughs and work in various environmental conditions.
