Job description

About Airwallex
Airwallex is the only unified payments and financial platform for global businesses. Powered by our unique combination of proprietary infrastructure and software, we empower over 250,000 businesses worldwide - including Brex, Rippling, Navan, Qantas, SHEIN and many more - with fully integrated solutions to manage everything from business accounts, payments, spend management and treasury, to embedded finance at a global scale.
Proudly founded in Melbourne, we have a team of over 2,300 of the brightest and most innovative people in tech across 27 offices around the globe. Valued at US$11 billion and backed by world-leading investors including T. Rowe Price, Visa, Mastercard, Robinhood Ventures, Sequoia, Salesforce Ventures, DST Global, and Lone Pine Capital, Airwallex is leading the charge in building the global payments and financial platform of the future. If you're ready to do the most ambitious work of your career, join us.
Attributes We Value
We hire successful builders with founder-like energy who want real impact, accelerated learning, and true ownership. You bring strong role-related expertise and sharp thinking, and you're motivated by our mission and operating principles. You move fast with good judgment, dig deep with curiosity, and make decisions from first principles, balancing speed and rigor.
You're humble and collaborative; turn zero‑to‑one ideas into real products, and you "get stuff done" end-to-end. You use AI to work smarter and solve problems faster. Here, you'll tackle complex, high‑visibility problems with exceptional teammates and grow your career as we build the future of global banking. If that sounds like you, let's build what's next.
About the team
Legal & Licensing at Airwallex sits at the heart of the decisions that shape how Airwallex grows. This team backs the visionary builders transforming Airwallex into a generational financial company, sharing the journey of product development and sales alongside our business partners. You'll help shape a global licensing footprint most fintechs wish they had, while making sure our brand and data architecture stay best-in-class for customers entering the agentic economy and ready for its regulatory demands. The hard part is helping the business move fast on product, revenue, and new-market expansion without compromising the regulatory discipline that protects the moat.
It's a team for lawyers, strategists, and licensing specialists with commercial instincts, sharp judgment, and an obsession with customer-first outcomes. If you want to guide executive decisions and help build the licensing, structure, and judgment behind what comes next, this is where legal has real leverage.
What you'll do
As Counsel in Product Legal, you will be a valuable member of the global Product Legal team and will help our rapidly growing business navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape. Although you will be based in the US, you will have multi-regional responsibility by supporting our product and partnership strategy and advising on complex technology transactions in EMEA and APAC. You will build strong business relationships with business teams and understand the business environment. When you don't know the answer, you'll know how to obtain the answer and explain it to business partners. This dynamic role is ideal for someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats and solving complex issues for our internal and external partners, is detail oriented, willing to take on challenges and changes, obsessively curious and intellectually honest, thrives on taking actions and delivering impactful results, and aims to inspire and be inspired. Experience in fintech or payments is welcomed, as is a demonstrated passion for mastering something new. Relevant subject-matter expertise may include knowledge of payments, card networks, and banking.
This hybrid role is based in San Francisco or New York City.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide advice and support to the product team, local legal teams, support functions, Airwallex management, and the Legal, Risk, and Compliance Department.
  • Negotiate customer partnerships for major deals and manage commercial drafting of sales agreements
  • Coordinate with local counsel across jurisdictions such as Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, The U.S., The UK., and The European Union to discern and devise optimal paths to market from a legal and regulatory perspective
  • Liaise with senior stakeholders of the Airwallex group, located around the world.
  • Manage external counsel and consultants on regulatory matters.
  • Support negotiations on complex and novel agreements with our strategic partners
  • Support government relations outreach to legislators and regulatory agencies

Who you are
We're looking for people who meet the minimum requirements for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory.
Minimum qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience as a lawyer at a top firm, in-house or a combination of both.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and ability to deal with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Versatility in supporting Product in an advisory role and in supporting Sales on commercial documents and terms
  • Proactive, results-driven, and take ownership of your work.
  • Ability to multi-task and a team player with strong communication skills
  • Strong drafting skills
  • Ability to master new areas of the law quickly
  • High levels of professionalism, integrity, and a strong work ethic, including a readiness to lend a helping hand to teammates

Preferred qualifications:
  • In-house legal experience gained ideally in the fintech industry or financial institutions
  • Subject-matter expertise in payments, card networks, or fintech
  • Experience working with stakeholders across the globe
