What does an ethics committee do?
An Ethics Committee is responsible for reviewing ethical concerns, policies, and compliance within an organization. It ensures that decisions align with ethical standards, legal requirements, and best practices. This may include evaluating research proposals, handling ethical complaints, or providing guidance on corporate responsibility. The committee typically consists of professionals from various disciplines to provide balanced and impartial oversight.
What are the typical responsibilities of an ethics committee member?
As an Ethics Committee member, you are responsible for reviewing and evaluating organizational practices, research proposals, or workplace incidents to ensure compliance with ethical standards and regulations. Your day-to-day tasks may include attending regular meetings, discussing ethical concerns, offering guidance on conflict-of-interest situations, and helping develop ethical policies. You will often collaborate with professionals from various fields, such as legal, medical, or human resources, to reach well-rounded decisions. This role requires balancing impartiality and empathy while safeguarding the organization's standards and stakeholder welfare.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the ethics committee position?
To thrive as a member of an Ethics Committee, you need a strong background in ethics, law, compliance, and often a relevant advanced degree such as in law, medicine, or philosophy. Familiarity with regulatory compliance systems, research protocols, and certification in ethics review (such as CITI Program certification) is typically valuable. Excellent critical thinking, unbiased judgment, diplomacy, and collaborative communication stand out as essential soft skills. These abilities are crucial because members must evaluate complex ethical dilemmas fairly and collaboratively to protect organizational integrity and stakeholder interests.

Job description
Michigan engineers play a key role in solving society's greatest challenges. We anticipate the global, technological and educational changes ahead - positioning our institution to lead engineering education and research.
As part of the Provost's Faculty Expansion Program (FEP), we seek candidates with exceptional potential to expand our capacity for transformative inquiry in high-impact areas of research/scholarship and societal challenge. Targets of this open position are mid-career tenure-track faculty who will catalyze, collaborate, and provide intellectual and institutional leadership in areas aligned with: Generative AI and Engineering Education; Intelligent Learning Environments; AI and K-12 Education/Assessment; AI Literacy; AI and Ethics in Engineering; Robotics and Ethics Education; Cybersecurity and Ethics; and related areas.
We seek a scholar whose research and development programs have focused on the development and application of learning technologies to achieve various learning opportunities, teaching practices, policies, and engineering and education systems. We also seek a scholar who has demonstrated the capacity to contribute to the creation and use of scholarship in both learning sciences and engineering, with strong methodological training in quantitative, qualitative, or multiple methods, who are able to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and who seek to influence practice and policy across both engineering and education professions.
This position seeks one tenure-track faculty member (with an emphasis on midcareer/senior candidates) who will hold a home appointment in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) or Robotics (ROB) and as a core Engineering Education Research (EER) faculty. Candidates with expertise in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality, particularly in applying these technologies to education, may be of special interest.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in engineering, computer science, computer engineering, human-computer interaction, robotics, engineering education, learning sciences, or related field demonstrating an exemplary track record in research, teaching, and service commensurate with a tenured advanced associate or full professor appointment.
- An established program of research and publication.
- A track record of developing and securing grants to support research, or the promise of developing such a record.
- A strong interest in advising and mentoring graduate students.
- Visionary leadership abilities, a broad appreciation for the diverse perspectives within the College and Program, and a strong interest in mentoring faculty.
- An ability to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and administrators to achieve common goals.
Desired Qualifications:
- Strong methodological training in quantitative, qualitative, or multiple methods.
Application Instructions
Applicants should electronically submit, in PDF format: (1) a detailed c.v., and (2) statements on research (also indicate your desired tenure home appointment preference), teaching, and service (prior and/or proposed work related to the intersection of CSE/ROB/EER). Applicants should be prepared to share a list of names and contact information for at least three references upon being invited for an on-site interview. The deadline for ensuring full consideration of an application is October 31, 2025, but the position will remain open and applications will continue to be considered until the position is filled.
