Job description

SEG is seeking an Assistant Estimator to join our team in Hamilton, Virginia.
The Assistant Estimator supports SEG's estimating and preconstruction team in preparing competitive estimates and proposals for commercial, institutional, civil, and federal construction projects.
This is a great opportunity for someone early in their construction career who wants to develop their skills in estimating, quantity takeoffs, subcontractor procurement, budgeting, and preconstruction planning while working alongside experienced estimators and project teams.
What You'll Do
  • Assist with conceptual, budgetary, and final construction estimates
  • Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and project documents
  • Assist with pricing labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work
  • Review drawings and project documents to understand scope and requirements
  • Assist with bid preparation and proposal development
  • Solicit pricing from subcontractors and suppliers
  • Review subcontractor proposals and assist with scope comparisons and bid leveling
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs
  • Assist with RFIs, bid clarifications, and proposal documentation
  • Support project planning, constructability reviews, and value-engineering efforts
  • Assist with subcontractor procurement and project buyout
  • Help transition awarded projects from estimating to the project team
  • Monitor government procurement platforms for upcoming opportunities and assist with tracking project pursuits and proposal deadlines

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and construction experience
  • 1-3 years of estimating, construction, project engineering, or related experience preferred
  • Basic understanding of construction means, methods, materials, and sequencing
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Experience with Bluebeam, estimating software, or construction management platforms is a plus
  • Commercial, institutional, civil, or federal construction experience is a plus
