Job description

Position / Title: Language Resource Teacher Bargaining Unit: ย  ETA Department/Location: Multilingual Multicultural and Education Department Calendar Days: 184 Reports To: Building Principal and MMED Coordinator JD Revision Date: 4/15/2024 Supervises: N/A

Function / Position Summary

The primary goal of this position is to provide content and language development support in an effort to improve academic achievement for English as a Second Language (ESL) students.ย  Specifically, it is to raise the level of language acquisition instruction at our ESL schools by supporting English Learners (EL's) students and classroom teachers in identifying and sustaining best practices that are culturally and linguistically responsive.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Effectively provides language acquisition support in multiple content areas.
  • Assists students in both languages to further their education and language proficiency growth.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and/or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the language needs of each student.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to properly utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Effectively establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Evaluates students' language, academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports as specified by the district.
  • Effectively communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students' progress and interpret the school program.
  • Identifies student cultural and linguistic needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, interest centers and learning stations.
  • Participate fully in professional development opportunities, stay current with ESL professional research and literacy publications, and attend job-related workshops and conferences including U-46 Rising professional development sessions.
  • Participates in the Teacher Appraisal Plan with the appropriate administrator to improve performance.
  • Participates with the principal and/or Coordinator of MMED for selecting appropriate texts, materials, and instructional aids, and maintains required inventory records.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the working day as assigned.
  • Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with the district-testing program.
  • Participates in faculty committees and student activities as appropriate.
  • Maintain and respect confidentiality.
  • Actively engage in meetings with the MME Department, coaches, and/or other Teaching and Learning groups as deemed appropriate for supporting the job responsibilities within this role.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the MME Director and/or Building Principal.

Education

  • Professional educator license issued by the state of Illinois with a Bilingual and/or ESL Endorsement required.
  • Must have a good command of the written and spoken language in both English and the desired language.

Experience / Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge in fundamental principles of ESL teaching and learning.
  • In-depth knowledge of reading and writing processes, assessment, and instruction for EL's at the elementary level.
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and facilitation skills in English and home language.
  • Knowledge of academic and language progress monitoring and analyzing benchmark assessments.
  • Demonstrate computer literacy.
  • Ability to research online resources and to synthesize and present information from those resources to enrich ESL teachers' instructional practices.
  • Expertise in selecting and implementing instructional materials for EL students.
  • Strong organizational skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrate professionalism by managing time effectively, working with different stakeholders (administrative staff, teachers, other Language Resource Teachers, and students), and engaging in continuous learning.
  • Must have exemplary interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong literacy development skills and native-like fluency in oral and written forms of both languages.
  • Evidence of experience with and leading colleagues in using fundamental principles of language acquisition teaching and learning, such as, but not limited to: English Language Arts CCSS, WIDA's English Language Development Standards, WIDA Can Do/Key Use descriptors, WIDA Performance definitions, formative and summative assessment practices, progress monitoring, data-driven decision making, etc.
  • Strong knowledge base of and experience working with EL's.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand and/or sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Occasional physical exertions to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.

Terms of Employment

  • This is a Nine-month position.
  • Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.
  • The starting salary for this role is $60,689.ย
