The Work You Will Do:

Materials Specialist-Lab/District One/District Materials Office

This role involves performing laboratory testing in accordance with Florida Sampling and Testing Methods as well as AASHTO or ASTM standards, ensuring precise reporting in the appropriate database and maintaining all equipment in proper working order. It includes analyzing materials data for contract and procedural compliance, taking prompt action to correct errors, and communicating issues or negative trends to stakeholders. The position provides timely technical support to customers. It supports continuous improvement by recommending enhancements to processes, informing stakeholders of changes, and helping ensure that project activities are consistent, predictable, and repeatable.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Perform laboratory testing in accordance with the applicable Florida Sampling and Testing Methods, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials or American Society for Testing and Materials test method. Report results precisely in the appropriate database. Keep all testing equipment calibrated and in good working order.

Perform analysis of materials data for contract and procedural compliance. Take timely action to correct any errors in the data. Actively facilitates the notification of stakeholders of errors, failures or negative trends.

Provide materials related technical support to customers as requested. Provide support in time to meet the customer's needs.

Review Quality Control plans, construction plans, specifications, procedures and any other documents necessary to execute the Department's mission. Provide clear comments as requested in time to be useful to the customer.

Make/recommend improvements to optimize delivery or improve results. Notify stakeholders of any changes to the project/process. Ensure project/process is consistent, predictable and repeatable.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of the concepts, terminology, principles and analytical techniques of Materials - Laboratory. 
  • Knowledge of engineering design, construction, production and/or operations.

 

Skills in:

  • Using engineering tools, equipment and/or instruments. 

Ability to:

  • Operate a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Analyze and interpret engineering data
  • Perform technical engineering inspections. 
  • Apply engineering quantitative techniques.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Communicate engineering information effectively.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Lift 50 pounds and move around uneven terrain without assistance.

Other Job-Related Requirements:

Must possess or obtain and maintain at least one of the following qualification areas: 1) Asphalt Plant Level 1; 2) Aggregate Testing Technician; 3) ACI Concrete Lab Technician Level 1; or 4) Aggregate Base Testing Technician; Limerock Bearing Ratio (LBR) Technician. Must pass or have passed Construction Math and Contract Plans Reading Self Study examinations. Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. Prior experience operating a personal computer for word processing and spreadsheet.
