Job description


The BI Developer (Intermediate) at UT Health San Antonio supports clinical, operational, and financial decision making by transforming complex healthcare data into meaningful, actionable insights. Working under supervision, this role designs, develops, tests, and maintains reporting and analytics solutions, with Epic serving as the primary platform.
The BI Developer partners with clinical, operational, and Health Information Systems stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable dashboards, reports, and key performance indicators. This role applies strong analytical thinking, data modeling principles, and SQL expertise to ensure accurate, reliable, and high quality reporting solutions. In addition to Epic reporting tools such as Radar, Reporting Workbench, SlicerDicer, and Clarity or Caboodle, familiarity with Advanced Analytics Plus capabilities, including data science and artificial intelligence tools, is valued.
The position participates in Epic upgrade activities, including testing and validation, and provides limited after hours on call support during designated rotation periods a few weeks per year. The BI Developer contributes to continuous improvement efforts, data governance practices, and the ongoing evolution of the organization's analytics environment.
Responsibilities
  • esign, build, test, and maintain reporting and analytics solutions, with Epic as the primary platform
  • Analyze structured and unstructured data to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights
  • Translate business requirements into technical specifications and develop dashboards, scorecards, and KPIs that support clinical, operational, and financial decision making
  • Apply data management and evaluation standards to ensure accuracy, integrity, and reliability of reporting solutions
  • Interpret and develop complex SQL queries for ad hoc reporting, data validation, and ETL processes
  • Create interactive visualizations and present findings through clear verbal, written, and visual communication, offering recommendations that support performance improvement
  • Provide BI and data analytics consultative guidance to stakeholders on the value and strategic use of data
  • Support designated Epic modules and application workgroups while collaborating across service lines to deliver holistic, organization wide insights.
  • Participate in Epic upgrades and various go live initiatives, including build review, testing, validation, issue resolution, and post implementation support to ensure reporting continuity and data integrity.
  • Partner with the training team and, when appropriate, work directly with end users to deliver education and ongoing support on Epic reporting tools, dashboards, and self service analytics solutions to ensure accurate interpretation and effective use of data.
  • Provide limited after hours on call support during designated rotation periods a few weeks per year
  • Stay informed about Business Intelligence industry trends, emerging analytics technologies, and Epic enhancements to continuously improve solutions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Proven ability to successfully manage and execute multiple assignments simultaneously in a matrixed healthcare environment

  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting capabilities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Epic reporting tools, including Radar, Reporting Workbench, SlicerDicer, and Clarity or Caboodle data models
  • Working knowledge of SQL, dimensional data modeling, and data warehousing concepts

As specified by the department director, Epic certification for assigned modules are required within eighteen (18) months of hire. Epic certification must be maintained per Epic Corporation standards - Required.
Certified in Epic Cogito Data Warehouse & Caboodle Data Model - Preferred.
Certified in Tableau - Preferred.
Proficiency with sophisticated analytics tools and programming languages (SAS, R, Python, Java, Spark, Hadoop, Alteryx, SQL); proficiency with data visualization tools (Tableau, QlikView, and others) - Preferred.
As specified by the department director, additional certifications for assigned software analytical tools (such as Tableau) are required within thirty-six (36) months of hire. Certification must be maintained per Health-IT standards
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in a scientific, technical, healthcare informatics, or mathematics field.
