What does an environmental engineering consultant do?

An Environmental Engineering Consultant provides expert advice and solutions to organizations on minimizing environmental impact and complying with environmental regulations. Their work involves assessing sites for pollution, designing systems to manage waste and water, and developing strategies for sustainable development. They often conduct environmental impact assessments, help companies obtain permits, and ensure projects meet legal and safety standards. Consulting can involve working with government agencies, private companies, or non-profit organizations on a wide range of environmental challenges.

What types of projects and clients can an environmental engineering consultant expect to work with, and how does this impact day-to-day responsibilities?

Environmental Engineering Consultants often work on diverse projects ranging from site assessments for new developments to remediation of contaminated land and water. Clients may include government agencies, private developers, industrial facilities, or non-profit organizations. This variety means that day-to-day responsibilities can shift between office-based analysis and reporting, on-site inspections, and client meetings. Consultants frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including scientists, planners, and regulatory specialists, requiring strong communication and project management skills. The dynamic nature of the work provides opportunities to develop expertise in different environmental sectors and grow professionally.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental engineering consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Engineering Consultant, you need a strong background in environmental science, engineering principles, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental engineering. Familiarity with modeling software (such as AutoCAD, GIS, and environmental impact assessment tools) and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are commonly required. Excellent analytical thinking, communication, and project management skills help consultants effectively solve problems and liaise with clients and regulatory bodies. These competencies ensure that projects meet technical, legal, and sustainability standards while maintaining client satisfaction.

What Your Impact Is:
  • Support the design and execution of remediation systems for groundwater, sediment, soil, and vapor at active and inactive sites
  • Apply insitu and exsitu remediation technologies, from emerging approaches to traditional treatment systems
  • Contribute to technically rigorous projects for large industrial and global clients, gaining exposure across project lifecycles
  • Build a strong foundation in consulting, field execution, and client interaction early in your career
What You'll Bring:

Curiosity, accountability, and a desire to learn through hands-on experience. You're comfortable balancing office-based technical work with field assignments and collaborating with diverse teams. You take pride in delivering quality work, staying organized, and communicating clearly-whether onsite, in the office, or with clients and regulators.

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical Engineering with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Or 8 years of equivalent experience in lieu of education

  • Strong writing, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments concurrently and multitask
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Detailoriented and thorough approach to work
  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Local candidates preferred
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship
Preferred
  • Master's degree in a related engineering discipline

  • Support remediation construction design, including:
    • Design calculations and drawings
    • Remediation and construction bid packages
    • Engineering cost estimates and technical specifications

  • Perform monitoring, operation, and maintenance of:
    • Groundwater remediation systems
    • Soil vapor extraction systems
    • Subslab depressurization systems
    • Other remediation technologies
  • Conduct fieldwork such as remedial pilot tests, quality assurance activities, and construction oversight
  • Provide office and field oversight of contractors, subcontractors, and construction inspectors
