What Does an Environmental Coordinator Do?

As an environmental coordinator, your responsibilities include evaluating, observing, and controlling the legal flow of various types of hazardous waste and environmental pollutants at a facility or job site. You serve as the on-site contact for all environmental waste contractors and inspectors, and you conduct land, water, and air observations, tests, and analyses, to recommend actions needed to maintain compliance with regulations, such as renewing permits and updating technology. You may be trained in special cleanup and material consolidation. Other duties include packaging and labeling materials, both hazardous and non-hazardous, for storage, shipment, or disposal, identifying and categorizing each as appropriate. You are expected to stay updated with changing regulations and to implement them as necessary. In some positions, you respond to emergencies related to pollution and stormwater and investigate incidents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Coordinator, and why are they important?

Familiarity with environmental management systems (EMS), reporting software, and certifications like ISO 14001 are typically required. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and manage multiple projects effectively. These skills ensure regulatory compliance, minimize environmental impact, and support sustainable business operations.

What are some common challenges an Environmental Coordinator might face when implementing sustainability initiatives within an organization?

They frequently need to communicate complex environmental regulations and persuade stakeholders to adopt new practices. Collaborating across teams and maintaining up-to-date knowledge on changing environmental laws are also key parts of the role, requiring strong interpersonal and project management skills.
