Job description

Job Description: The Software Engineer at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Franklin, Wisconsin will support critical applications that support life insurance application processing and contract generation. Dig deep into technology and collaborate with product management, engineers, and designers to enhance and modernize top tier technical applications. Apply understanding of software life cycle and design patterns to understand technical features being built. Participate in weekly refinement meetings. Utilize development skills, impact analysis, using tools for debugging, compiling, merging and unit testing. Practice Agile Methodologies to implement these Technical Application requirements. Understand business requirements for specific technical project. Focus on technologies to provide efficient solutions. Collaborate with an engineering team and responsible for monitoring live systems, fixing bugs, writing new features, maintaining documentation, participating in planning sessions and mentoring junior engineers. Collaborate in a deeply functional manner with engineers and business to brainstorm requirements for features and solution through difficult defects. Analyze technical solutions and provide estimates for feature implementation. Explain technical solutions to both technical and non-technical teams and apply experience architecting the design solutions. Work on monitoring applications including mainframe batch jobs and applications. Develop code for new features such as Single Front Door and CCR and new life insurance products. Develop Mainframe REST services for modernization projects. Work with engineering leaders in improving CICD for mainframe, re-writing code to enable better unit testing. Apply experience with engineering best practices, including analyzing, designing, developing, deploying and supporting software solutions and infrastructure implementations, infrastructure, implementations, and upgrades. Follow Agile scrum software development lifecycle and apply hands-on skills in PL/1 CICS, DB2, JCL, IMS DB, VSAM, COBOL, MQ Series, Host Scope. Telecommuting permitted 2 days per week. Salary $119,627- $175,760 per year.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related field and 5 years of experience as a software engineer or in a related occupation. Experience must include at least 5 years of experience with each of the following: (1) DB2, JCL, COBOL, PL1, CICS, RDBMS, VSAM, MQ Series, and Host Scope; (2) analyzing, designing, developing, deploying, and supporting software solutions and infrastructure implementations; (3) ticketing systems including ServiceNow, TFS, Cherwell, and Remedy; (4) Jira for sprint events, Dashboard creation, and defect logging and tracking; (5) following Agile scrum methodologies for software development lifecycle; and (6) contributing in scrum events including Daily standup, Backlog grooming, Sprint Planning, Retro, and Demos. Must also have three years of experience with ChangeMan source control and CI/CD practices.
