Job description

Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse provides direct care to patients using the nursing process. This includes ongoing assessment of the total patient. The RN provides interventions to treat the presenting symptoms and evaluates the effect of nursing interventions and patient's responses. The RN functions as a team leader/member and resource to others. The RN delegates, oversees and provides direction to support staff. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to establish goals and outcomes for each patient. The RN is responsible for meeting the needs of all types of patients.

Responsibilities

Regularly assesses patient's needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based nursing practice.

Provides direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as appropriate.

Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.

The RN is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines as well as hospital specific policies and procedures relating to care provided in the medical center.

Demonstrates a general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit. Instructs other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care.

Demonstrates understanding of clinical pathways and utilizes appropriately.

Maintains a professional demeanor in all situations.

Documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way and includes pertinent clinical data. Shares information and reports significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members in a timely manner.

Participates in regulatory surveys.

Participates in the performance improvement activities.

Assists with orientation and ongoing competencies.

Provides a safe and secure environment for patient care.

Maintains knowledge with current trends and professional standards within a specialty.

Demonstrates understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedures.

Sets up and assists with central line and chest tube insertion and care for these tubes according to policy and procedure. Inserts Cantor tubes, nasogastric tubes, and feeding tubes per physician order, following proper procedure. Inserts and provides care for IV's. Provides routine care and instruction of SP catheters and surgical drains following physician order. Provides proper care for drains and removal of same.

Removes sutures and skin clips, provides routine ostomy care and irrigates and packs wounds, following physician order, procedure and care plan.

Does accurate CVP reading, according to physician order and following proper procedure. Sets up, instructs and monitors use of PCA.

Obtains doppler pulses following proper procedure. Provides routine care of gastrostomy/jejunostomy tubes according to procedure and physician orders. Assists in heparin therapy protocol per procedures.

Applies basic traction, splints, braces, and CPM machines following procedure and physician order.

Puts and trims casts, removes wound drains following physician order and procedure.

Maintains total hip and total knee precaution measures and instructs patients.
